Ik denk dat het ongeveer een 10 jaar geleden moet zijn dat ik de eerste Dune trilogie heb gelezen. Ik weet dat ik in ieder geval eerst de film van David Lynch heb gezien en daar uitermate door gecharmeerd was (als één van de weinigen denk ik) maar ik had het na die initiële drie boeken wel weer gehad met de reeks. Ik betrapte me er echter op dat ik alles met Dune wel bleef kopen (ik zit ondertussen aan 13 delen) en de meest recente aanschaf was deel 4, 5 en 6. Dat betekent dat ik in één ruk van Dune tot aan The Machine Crusade kon lezen.
En aangezien ik goede herinneringen heb aan het aanpakken van het Dark Tower universum en het Lord of the Rings universum, wou ik dat (op de valreep van) dit jaar met de Dune saga doen. Dit eerste deel smaakt in ieder geval naar meer. Zeker het eerste stuk met de komst van de Atreides clan op Arrakis is van een erg hoog niveau met tal van geweldige personages (wat is het jammer dat Leto zo snel verdwijnt) en gewoon erg veel sfeer & spanning. Het middenstuk is een beetje taaier doordat het zich iets teveel concentreert op de lotgevallen van Paul en Jessica maar dat lost zich vanzelf op eenmaal die zich bij de Vrijmans aansluiten. Toch zijn er hier en daar ook wel wat belangrijke nuances in deze review met onder andere het feit dat de tijdssprong een beetje geforceerd en vooral gemakzuchtig aanvoelt (Alia krijgt daardoor niet de diepgang die ze verdient) maar vooral de aanhangsels staken me wat tegen. Ik voel me altijd een beetje bekocht wanneer een verhaal eindigt en je nog met 50+ pagina's overblijft. Oké, je kunt hier het argument maken dat het op zich nog wel interessante toevoegingen zijn maar dan had ik liever de Lord of the Rings aanpak gezien waar a) een soort van Silmarillion wordt opgezet of b) een apart boek getiteld "De Aanhangsels" wordt uitgebracht met dit soort informatie in. Kleine kanttekening daarbij is dat optie b oorspronkelijk ook gewoon aan Return of the King was toegevoegd en enkel maar later is uitgebracht als apart boek.
Ik ben in ieder geval wel benieuwd naar hoe de rest van de saga zich gaat ontwikkelen. Flarden herinner ik me nog, maar over het algemeen is het een zwart gat. Ik geloof dat er nog wel wat tijdssprongen aan te pas komen en ik weet niet, afgaande op de manier waarop Herbert er in dit boek mee omgaat, of ik dat effectief zo leuk ga vinden. Ach ja, we zullen wel zien. Wordt ongetwijfeld vervolgd!

Dune, you have my heart.
I’ve always been a Scifi girlie so while I hadn’t read Dune, I was super hyped to go see the movie in 2021. I wasn’t reading a lot back then, so when I read a plot synopsis I decided that was enough Dune for the time being.
This time around, I decided that I might as well read the 1965 paperback that I found at Goodwill last year.

My book thoughts: My biggest issue with scifi is the lack of women characters. Dune has so many INTERESTING women in it. I loved how Herbert basically skipped over battle scenes so he could write a ton of tense, complex, political, and long dialogue scenes. Jessica is one of my favorite fictional characters. Paul is pretty neat.

This was not my cup of tea. Overall boring, with little to no thrill of excitement. I was hoping to find an enjoyable Sci-fi series with this one since they made it into a movie, but I was wrong. The movie may be good, but I'm Duned out for awhile.
I, much like many people, mostly read this book because the second movie was coming out, and I wanted to read it before seeing either one. Dune is a genre defining spectacle that was mostly enjoyable. I understand why this book is as famous as it is. However, I didn't find it, particularly grabbing.
Most of my issues came from the slow style of writing and the odd jumps in pacing, I found the world very interesting. Unfortunately, the characters were a bit flat and mostly just acted exactly how they needed too, that being said, I think some character arcs really serve the stories message, especially Stilgar.
Speaking of the message, I found the anti religious extremism and nationalism messaging pretty obvious and on the nose but that was clearly not the case for many readers.
I rate Dune a flat 3.0.

Finished rereading it about 27 years after reading it for the first time. Funny how having lived through the last decade of the "Clash of Civilizations" seems to have added to the layers of context while removing some of the exoticism of the Islam / Arab inspired elements. Also strange to realize how much my memory of it had been colonized by the David Lynch film.
