We did this as a read aloud, as a family. It was fun. Some of the language gets difficult (dialects) but most of it was fine.

What an ending!

I don't know how I made it through high school, college, and a graduate degree without ever being asked to read a Dickens book. I have several on my shelf, and decided that it was time for me to read one.

This book wasn't what I expected in two main ways.

First, it was harder to read than I thought it would be. I didn't always understand everything that was going on, especially in the longer descriptive sections. My reading speed was slower.

Second, it was more interesting than I expected. I have heard so much about Dickens, but having never read his books, I think I got it into my head that they would be complex and mundane. This book has fewer characters than I expected, and they are more interesting. I really enjoyed the last half of the book, and I loved the last 50 pages.

I will certainly be reading more Dickens soon.

A classic for a reason. Amazing story, very well written. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is quite dated in terms of the drama, but you can't really expect a book from so long ago to read exactly right today. The other thing is, it's just not my thing!! Call me lazy, but I like books that require a little less study to fully understand. It was a little too high-level for me!! lmao

This was my first Dickens novel since high school, and absolutely adored it. Reading it now feels so relatable to our current government and society. I love the way Dickens strings vivid details throughout his pose. Would read a million times over.

Okay, so maybe I haven't read this book since 9th grade. And maybe I never exactly "read" the entire book. But I have to say I really tried! Unfortunately I found this book so unbearably boring that every time I tried to read it I just fell asleep - I didn't want to it just was like a magic sleeping potion. And I just remember thinking "it's been like 5 pages and they're still walking up the stairs!".

Maybe some day in life I'll give it another shot... maybe not.

Amazing. This book is beautiful to me. Not the subject matter, but the subtle punctuation of words and images as the chaos builds and comes together in the almost anticlimactic, surrendered end. Like I said, it's just beautiful.
