i think it is just a bit important to note, if you are looking at reviews to decide if you should read this book, there is a slightly graphic scene of cruelty against a dog. and a lot of this book revolves around children
this book ripped my heart out, stomped on it, and threw it off a cliff. it is an exploration of how easily we can mirror what traumatized us as children, its about moving forward with your trauma, not letting it drag you down or define you, but not trying to ignore it. its about friendship and family and morality and how easily children can be led down a dark path. its about ending the cycle. i have not read a cosmic horror before and wow what an experience. i love how ambiguous the ending is, everything could be exactly as it was presented, or it could be a paranoid alcoholic going through withdrawal hallucinations and prescribing meaning to things that truly dont have any.DENNIS WARREN IS THE HERO OF THIS STORY FUCK BLACK MOUTH!!

Graphic: Animal cruelty
I liked Black Mouth, it was interesting at the beginning, even though I felt myself losing that interest as I read along. The horror factor was not anything too crazy, but the eerieness of it all kept me reading.

I went into this completely blind because I just needed to start something mid-long-distance-car-journey - what a pleasant surprise! Complex but likeable characters, all really diverse without feeling 'token', and I did really care about what happened to them. The story was well paced for the most part, I really enjoyed the change in timeline/POV, although I did find the finale to be a bit long. The horror elements were really giving Doctor Sleep vibes, so the odd gratuitously violent scene that is included did kind of feel out of place, but overall a really refreshing take for a modern hororr book. I will definitely be reading more Malfi!

While this premise itself feels like a tired trope jowai, the characters are likeable (the good ones, anyway), with The Magician being an interesting and layered antagonist that I didn't expect. I will say a few things were unnecessary in my eyes, such as Stull and the dog, and the final death in the book, which felt wildly rushed, pointless, unexplained, and because of that, unnecessary.
There's a lot of telling vs showing in this book, but I didn't mind most of it for once. I like how the author writes, especially descriptive sections. I don't understand why - and didn't like - the author decided to jump between third and first person depending on the character. Just pick one. Jaime didn't need to be first person while all others were third, just makes the book inconsistent.
Overall I did enjoy this book.
