I enjoyed this book immensely. I thought the author did a great job intertwining her life experiences with the medical experiences of her patients. I know some of the reviews said she was a bit “preachy,” but honestly the way she spoke about meditation and spirituality reminded me of things my dad might say, and he’s the wisest man I know. If you have an interest in the medical field and can get past a little moralistic writing, I recommend you read this book.

I cannot even say how much I loved this book. It starts out a little slow. Don’t give up.

Addendum:
I see another review saying it’s preachy and political. It’s not, and I don’t think anyone who finished the book would say that. This is all about a personal journey of revelation, healing, and self discovery. You will learn more about struggles of Black people in inner cities if you’re a white person, but it’s not preachy, and that is not her core message. After finishing it, I feel inspired to return to the way I loved myself ten years ago.

I’m a doctor and thought this would be a good read. The beginning was pretty decent but unfortunately it devolved into Harper constantly harping on how hard her life was as a doctor and the constant forced mentions of yoga. I went through similar training, just a touch longer than her. Although my childhood experiences are in no way similar to hers I think I can somewhat relate with her finding a good outlet while in medical training and practice, which I believe is essential to the mental well-being of any physician. However, I’d never mention my own hobbies over and over the way she does even in a casual conversation with somebody. I think it was all just a bit dramatic and overdone. Like I said, first half was good. As an aside, the hatred she felt towards some of her patients right off the bat was a bit concerning. If you don’t like these ‘difficult’ patients then EM is absolutely not the field for you.

Hit close to home. I have only worked in the ED for a short amount of time, but have already seen many cases like what she describes. Good and thoughtful writing❤️

Love this book and I have been telling everyone to read it. The authors writing style and sequencing were amazing, and she broke my heart through her storytelling.
