No world building AT ALL, the writing was just tell and not show, the MC was insufferable and all her actions were just to make the plot go forward (and the fact that she has a BOWL stuck on her head just made all of it worst)

4.5 stars. Lovely story with endearing characters but it didn’t amaze me or blow me away at all, however I’m interested enough to read the sequel. Fun and comforting read ☺️

“If fate is a bunch of strings, then I’ll carry scissors. My choices are my own. I’ll make them as I please.”

This book was so fun! It was so interesting and I was hooked from the start. The writing was easy to read that I read the first 140 pages in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down! The story was unique to what I’ve read before and I was so excited to see which direction this book went in ✨
Shiori was a such great main character, so easy to root for! She had great character development and you can really see how certain events changed her. Another character I loved was Kiki, Shiori’s paper bird companion! She was so funny and honest. Also great at giving help and advice which was needed!
I loved reading about Shiori’s relationship with her brothers and all of the different dynamics there! I thought it might be difficult to know them as there’s six but they’re all different in personality so I didn’t have that problem.
The characters were all written so well! There were so many I have strong opinions on and I got so mad at the way some were treating Shiori! The romance in this book is definitely a sub plot so don’t go in expecting loads but all of the interactions were super cute! 🤭
There was a moment near the middle where the pace was slower but it soon picked up. The last quarter of this book in particular was wild omg, so much happened!! There were plenty of twists that I didn’t see coming! The explanations had me like 🫨 I’m excited to read the sequel as this book set up so well for it! Also the prequel which has been recommended to me to read before but I’m excited but scared to read it 🥺

no wayyyy this mf had a BOWL on her fucking head dawg.
I always liked the six swans so it's expected that i liked this book. good world building and the writing style isn't cringe af like recently released books. i predicted what raikama's original name was and it made me feel kinda smart even tho it was kind of obvious. the middle of the book kind of dragged at some points i was just like come onnnn get to the point already. main thing i don't like about this is that some parts were unnecessarily dragged out especially when she was living with takkan. also there's so much emphasis on magic being forbidden but we barely got to see shiori practicing her magic other then awakening things.
this is so random and maybe im just gluttonous but i really enjoyed the food descriptions... i am very interested in trying sticky rice dumplings, persimmons, and monkey cakes now.
the romance was cute but i didn't really care for it. i rolled my eyes at the betrothal bs and i dont give a single shit about takkan but i like that he's not the typical broody grumpy love interest and someone actually nice. i can see why shiori actually liked takkan unlike some other mcs and their love interests *coughonceuponabrokenheartcough*

for the first time, i cried in tears of reading a book. this is it.

the story of Six Crimson Cranes touched all the places of my heart. i fell in love with the world-building as well as the folklore. elizabeth lim's creative way of storytelling brought me tears. the characters are so well-written, i wish i was there with them ?!?!

despite it having a hint of romance (which i totally love), it did not stray shiori's purpose off. my shiori suffered so much, my poor girl T-T

AND TAKKAN?1!?1 i didnt expect that i would love him so much. i was kinda rooting for seryu at first but noticed na he doesnt have much screentime from the book so it is CLEARLY TAKKAN AND IM NOT COMPLAINING !

kiki was sooo savage, i just love that paper bird so much!! AAAA her dynamic with shiori was the best throughout the book.

what made me cried was
the scene with raikama at the end. my heart HURTS and to think na she only protected them in her own way, even its cruel.. that shattered me.

it was truly an emotional rollercoaster. an adventure of a life time that you will never forget.

so far.. my best read of 2025. <3

ps. no one told me that this is a duology omg i need the second book so baddd!
