clunky but cute

A little clunky but the story was captivating and the world with interesting. A world where vampires turn into swamp monsters? Hmmm… kind of a cheesy let down figuring out her parental history though…

I would say the current rating around 4.2 is pretty accurate. I really enjoyed Reagan and Darius' storyline. I can see the foreshadowing for the books to come and I am excited! This book is a bit different than many fantasy books with more elements all within one book rather than focusing on one type of supernatural. There are demons and werewolves, witches and warlocks. It doesnt have much for steam in this installment, but I am hopeful for book 2 for that. I would say it's a slow burn for sure. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy romance.

Born in Fire is the first of K. F. Breene's Fire and Ice Trilogy. I love the idea of this series and wish it went longer than just three books. There's way too much to still discover about Reagan, Darius, and their friends.
Reagan has a heritage that she's trying to keep hidden while trying to survive as a bounty hunter of mystical beings. Darius is the vampire that keeps stealing her marks but helps her in his own way. Their relationship will develop a lot more in the later books.
This book was pretty much the set up to introduce us to the main characters and let us know their capabilities. It also introduced us to some of the possible antagonists in future books, including Dracula.
I suggest giving this series a chance, it's darn good.

While this really seems like a kitchen-sink type plot (I mean, look at all those tags, right?), it came together quite nicely. Sometimes, it felt like being led through a dark room only to have your eyelids burned off by a startling truth. You know, in a neat way.

Hmmm...I liked the flow and pacing of the story. The only thing I found lacking was main-character development. I mean, we do find out why they (the heroine and her sidekick/babysitter) are the way they are, but they don't really develop or grow all that much. Perhaps that's further down the line, though?

I did very much enjoy the mystery and the side characters-definitely quirky enough for my tastes. The badass middle-age mage couple and the lowlife street thugs who live in the neighborhood. I would read stories just about them. :)

Completely cliche storyline and definitely something I've read in about 2 other series in the last month. But sometimes it's just what you want... And it's well written enough that I'm ok with it.

I’m pumped to read more!

This is the first book in the series, so we meet the characters.

There’s our mystery female lead, Reagan. We find out that she’s a bounty hunter who doesn’t want people to find out her lineage, because if her Dad finds out about her, then life will become difficult.

Next is the handsome, vampire male lead, Darius. Yummy! Strong, fast, sexy, and has manners to die for! Yes! These two team up to take on a mystery person who is trying to amass an army to take over and gain power.

In short, we have a fun little plot and good characters. We throw in good mages Dizzy and Callie for kicks and giggles and this is an enjoyable first book in the series.

I’m excited to read the next. I enjoy the swears this author uses. They’re creative and funny. I hope you give this a try. Happy reading y’all!!

3 stars but leaning almost towards 2.5...

This book was interesting enough and I definitely want to read the sequels but it was also pretty messy.

I felt like we were just dropped in with no real explanation of the world or magic system. You kind of just learned as you went along but it was not explained well and I still find myself confused on just how exactly the magic system works. Something about being able to put spells in casings and things? Idk.

Also I feel like this book was trying too hard to be funny. Like Reagan was never serious which is fine but it also meant that there was no real depth to her character for me. But the whole time it just felt like it was trying too hard with the constant jokes and things.

I did like Darius though and the book's take on Vampires. The author had a good grasp on making vampires actually feel like dark otherworldly beings as opposed to hot dangerous guys with fangs. Darius felt old and other and the fact they have a monster side? I really enjoyed that. The whole vampire scene in general in this book was very fun and interesting to read.

Another issue I had though was that it seemed like everything had to have a big reveal that didn't really pan out quite like how the author intended. Secrets were just thrown around and revealed wildly that I was having a hard time following things. Nothing was really explained well while other things that were insignificant were explained too well to the point that I was skipping paragraphs of seemingly useless information about lore or something that didn't really pertain to what was going on.

Overall it was alright. The New Orleans setting was fun and the book was interesting but in general... meh.
