Excellent book

A fantastic, heart-wrenching story! Kelly Rimmer is a fantastic author and it’s obvious she has done her research to make her stories truly historically accurate. The narrators also do a fantastic job of letting you into their world.

4.5
Takes you on a journey you might not consider. I also felt a lot of empathy for the characters and found myself really invested.

Audiobook: great narrators

Nice perspective on WWII fiction

I appreciated an honest depiction of both American and German victims of the war. And that things aren’t also black or white during times of war.

4.5 - such a gripping and devastating story. sofie and jurgen’s love was truly palpable, i almost have to go back to the beginning to read the chapter where they were reunited in the US. such a horrific topic to cover, but kelly rimmer managed to draw out every type of emotion from me while reading this. last chapter gave me goosebumps!

This is one that I will be thinking about for a long time. It was the book club pick for the readathon. Emotionally conflicting & thought-provoking, The German Wife shares the tale of two women worlds apart beginning in the pre-war 1930s until they meet in Huntsville, Alabama 20 years later. Ultimately the story is about Operation Paperclip, a controversial secret US Intelligence program that employed former Nazis, but it’s also about two women making incredibly difficult decisions in order to protect their loved ones.
Kelly Rimmer’s well-researched portrayal features vivid characters, a unique timeline, and dynamic writing. It’s the best historical fiction novel I’ve read so far this year! Highly recommend it on audio.

I love Kelly Rimmer’s writing, I find I always get so emotional reading her characters and stories. The things we cannot say left me bereft. This was written so well and was truly heart wrenching at times. Really recommend.

This book was excellent, wow. I did a mix of the audiobook & the hard copy for the first time & really enjoyed both. :) The author balanced both characters and both timelines easily, & I never found myself lost or confused. It was an extremely thought-provoking story, & a sobering reminder of our own hypocrisy and failure to recognize that it’s not one massive decision that lands you somewhere you never thought you’d be or go but the everyday choices about things we decide to ignore or let slide because they’re “not a big deal.” It’s easy to say, “that would never have been me,” but this book really forces you to examine that statement a little more closely. What would you have done to save your family? Your children? What should you have done? If the power of choosing whose lives are sacrificed is seemingly in your hands, what do you do?

This book offered a challenging perspective on the everyday choices that had to be made and the slow deterioration of standards. Excellently written. The audiobook was superb.
