To say this book was a thorough examination of the Nixon era would be a severe understatement. I learned so much about this fraught time in American politics and society.

It's dense, but if you like reading meaty books about politics this book is the one for you. The stories are not only well researched and entertaining, but they are also a bit too relevant for comfort. All the usual suspects are here: grievance politics? Check. Rampant police overreach? Check. Manipulating people's racial ignorance? Check. Corruption. Man, if you think Donald Trump is the most corrupt president ever, wait until you read what shit Nixon was into. Using polarization to win elections? Using divisiveness to make your citizens hate each other? Check and check.

I tried, seriously, but this is one long-ass book about Nixon. I couldn't get interested or motivated, so I didn't finish. Maybe I will try again later!

I thought 2017 was bad. 2017 got nothing on 1967. Trump is nothing new.

Less a presidential biography than an evocation of an entire era and national mindset, and it is all the better for it. Breezily written, well-researched, and surprisingly fun to read despite being nearly 900 pages. I especially enjoyed all the bits with Nixon being an absolute fucking freak; he really was a man built for a crueler era. The only negative is the weird liberal-ass both sides thing Perlstein does at the end. Shut up man! Political violence is cool! (When I agree with the people doing it).

it has so much detail in it that it’s quite difficult to read extensively without wanting to take notes but i really never knew how evil nixon was. excited to see him get impeached in the follow-up
