Definitely intriguing but didn't really lived up to its hype. It's one of those 'this-could-really-work' kind of ideas but the quality of writing just didn't stick so much, that the only entertainment value that makes you want to know what's going to happen next is just the ever-looming mystery of 'the cure' and the impending human extinction. But as far as, again, the panel directions and the dialogue..it's a bit messy.

Received a galley from Image Comics in exchange for a review

Beauty is one of those wonderful stories that makes you question your morals as much as it entertains you. In the universe created by Haun, Hurley and Rauch, physical perfection is just one STD away. But like most "too good to be true" things, turns out that there's a major dark side to infecting yourself with a disease that makes you beautiful. The story pits two detectives, Kara Vaughn and Drew Foster, against a web of deceit which they must unravel in order to find out what's causing the beautiful to die in a blaze of glory. It's a fascinating premise that doesn't deliver quite as well on its villains as it does its heroes but nonetheless presents a very interesting and compelling story which kept me glued to the page from beginning to end.

I read a lot of stuff. I can't keep story lines straight. Sometimes, I believe I went to Hogwarts. This summation will be chock-a-block filled with spoilers for this volume. Hopefully, I'll be able to untangle this story line in the future and keep everything straight.

Spoiler
A new STD is the hottest trend. People becomes incredibly beautiful afterwards, but, suddenly, begin dying (800 days?) afterwards. Two detectives work the case - one of who (the male) is infected with The Beauty when his wife is having an affair. The other (the woman) seems to be previously infected and hates it. They discover that more and more people have been dying of The Beauty. They meet with an anti-Beauty group who is creating a cure. Some crazy dude in a mask attacks them. The deputy director of the CDC agrees to help the group out, steals a flu virus, and mixes the antidote so the cure becomes contagious. One of the detectives agrees to test out the cure and she is left rather skeletal. Mexican mask guy attacks the anti-Beauty group, kills most, but is killed by female detective. Deputy director of the CDC is killed by Robeson (?) when she injects him with the cure. Anti-Beauty spreads out and moves to spread the cure.

Special thanks to NetGalley for giving me a copy of this volume to review.

The Beauty is probably one of the most interesting and original stories I've ever read. Action-packed and intriguing, this dystopia takes place in a world where an STD is making people beautiful. This has worked as a powerful incentive for many of them wanting to become infected. However, when mysterious and apparently unexplainable deaths start happening, the agents in charge of investigating the case discover that the beauty might be more dangerous than anyone thought.

The main characters uncover a whole conspiracy that involves the government and even a really weird (and creepy) killer. In order to find the answers they need, their lives will be in danger and they will constantly be on the run from the pyscho chasing them.

I enjoyed this story a lot, it was fast-paced, clever and intriguing. The art was astounding, it has some really creepy panels that I personally really liked.

My only critic would probably be that I felt like I didn't really got to know the characters so well. I'm hoping for better character development on the following volumes. However, I strongly recommend this story to anyone who loves action and even a bit of horror. It was a relief to see the idea of a virus/plague develop without the need of zombies.

Great piece of work.

What would you do to be beautiful? Would you willingly contract a STD if it made you beautiful? In Beauty that is the world you are immersed in. Society is fractured. There are people who have Beauty, either willingly or unknowingly. There are people who have not contracted Beauty and some on them are part of an Anti-Beauty Terrorist group; they have a cure. However, this disease is bigger than local government, the CDC, and the terrorist group combined, and people will kill to keep the truth about Beauty a secret.
