This book started off slow for me, but it did get more interesting. I just didn’t vibe with it.

“Because there was nothing in a girl’s history that might negate her right to choose what happens to her body.”
This book had some nice charm to it; the island especially felt like it had an identity all it's own. I did manage to predict one of the plot points pretty soon into the story. I thought the romance was okay, nothing too special, but nice just the same. I really enjoyed Harrison's quirkiness, he was definitely one of my favorite characters along with Vira. Overall a decent story, just not perfect for my particular tastes.

* I just went on a little Google adventure to see if a female bird could hatch without a male present (sans magic) and it's kinda possible! Parthenogenesis! It doesn't really work in birds, or the chicks that come out have issues, but asexual reproduction would've been a nice talking point to expand on the asexual-aromantic (I think!?) best friend.

At first this felt VERY YA, but I pushed through because I loved Horrid by Katrina Leno, and I'm so glad I read this one till the end because boy did it take an unexpectedly dark turn! So don't be fooled by the cover like I was; there are a couple trigger warnings in this book, such as rape and death of a loved one. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy magical realism, a subtle magic system, and characters with varying powers as opposed to everyone having all the same supernatural abilities. This is such a cute yet hard-hitting story about a family with a bad rep living on this little island all their lives, featuring two sisters discovering new things about themselves and their history.

I simply don't have words for how this book made me feel. I picked this up barely knowing what it's about and without having heard anyone talk about this before. Gosh, what a hidden gem this was. It's a book that makes you feel understood and loved and makes you want to hold onto something or someone a little tighter. You can feel the magic all throughout this book even though it's really not a prominent part of the story. It made my heart flutter and ache all at once. Such an important story and I'm so glad I got to read it. I can't recommend it enough truly.
Even though the title suggests that this would be a summer read it totally gave me chilly end of summer/going into fall vibes and had quite a 'spooky', cold atmospheric setting which I absolutely loved. It turned out to be a perfect book to read during this time of the year where the sun is still shining brightly and gives the leaves a golden hue but the blue skies can turn into storms minutes after. A book to snuggle up to with a big cup of tea for sure!
tw: rape, sexual assault (mentioned only), animal death, underage drinking

I have not been having a lot of luck with the past books I have read. This one in particular just felt slow and the plot seemed uneventful, which I find odd because it also had so much potential

One of the big plot points was obvious to me from the beginning, and I didn’t mind. The other big plot point I knew was coming because I read the acknowledgments first, as I tend to do, but still missed how it happened and who it was .
Even with the spoilers, I still found this little town and its drama fascinating.
