Apparently there's a foodie trend in literary rom-coms that follows real life foodie trends. Was cupcakes, now it's donuts? Who knew.
Fun book. Light and fluffy, with a little depth to make it interesting. Post partum depression, Asian stereotypes/gender expectations.
I enjoyed the story and the characters though the story dragged a bit in the middle, once the Relationship really started.

This book was truly not the best.
-The writing was clunky and suffered from the common mistake of telling and not showing how the characters felt and what thoughts motivated their actions.
-The FMC and MMC had absolutely zero chemistry. I truly believe the only reason the MMC had feelings for the FMC was because she didn’t treat him like he was famous, which is not the sole reason two people should date.
-The “redemption” arc for the MMC’s dad was nonsensical, and both the MMC and his sister would have been better off going no contact.
-The third act breakup was so stupid that it’s almost laughable.
-If I took a drink for every time the MMCs abs were mentioned, I’d be dead by page 10. The gratuitous use of his abs as a plot device to show off his “cocky” personality actually took me out of the story and did not work at all.
Despite these infractions, I did like reading about the MMCs struggle with being an Asian-American actor; albeit it still felt surface level. I think that could have been explored in a much more meaningful way.
Also, this book really did make me want a donut or some cake.

[a:Jackie Lau|17814757|Jackie Lau|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1521036145p2/17814757.jpg]'s latest, Donut Fall in Love, delivers exactly what I've come to expect from one of her books--it's sweet, funny, romantic, and good grief, makes me hungry. Donuts, cupcakes, cakes, bubble tea, six-pack abs--all my weaknesses ;)
Ryan and Lindsay have an absolutely adorable meet cute, and their baking lessons are positively mouthwatering, in every possible way. Behind all the cuteness, though, they're both dealing with a lot--Ryan's family is in a free fall, and Lindsay's BFF/roommate/business partner has just gotten married, which means she's had to get a new apartment and roommate, and for someone who hasn't made a new friend in years, the adjustment is...a lot. And did I mention her mother's started dating again?
Rooting for the two of them to get together was a no-brainer, even while you knew it wasn't going to be easy--after all, he is Ryan Kwok of #StarringRyanKwoksAbs!--and though I do wish they'd explored that a bit more (also what was going on with @RyanKwoksFather's secret life? We got some of that toward the end, but it still felt a bit thin) the epilogue was lovely. Now, please tell me there's a Mel/Vivian story in the works :)

This pacing of this book was sooooo slow. I feel like half the time it was just narration of what the character was doing: "She got to the bar. She ordered a beer. She ordered this beer and her friend ordered that beer. She likes getting beer with her friend." I found myself skimming most of it because 95% of the word count was just describing what they were doing. Way more telling than showing.
DNF
- I wanted to like it, but it just didn't hold my interest and I was really bored
- The romance was kind of insta-romance, which I didn't really enjoy and I just found it cringey at some points
- The idea of the story was really cute, it just kind of fell flat for me
- It was really cool to have a story that was set in Canada! This is the first book that I've read that's based here, which made it fun

Didn't like the pacing, plus it was a book club book and book the meeting has happened so... no motivation to finish it.
DNF at 35% - story line and characters were boring and had very little depth.

All that this book accomplished for me was making me want to eat my weight in donuts. I just couldn’t get into it. It was so long when it felt like it could be a novella, and the dialogue was so awkward. There were parts where the characters would speak like they were a space alien that came to earth undercover and tried to fit in with other humans.
