I had high hopes for this book. And at about the halfway point, I expected this to possibly be the best fiction I would read this year. The second half seemed rushed, however.
The author, Millet, is clearly a talented writer. There is a lot of symbolism in this book- and I love symbolism. Children are the wisdom-givers - I also love that. I wanted the ending of the book to help me make sense of the story, and I missed it. Perhaps that’s the author’s point. There is no sense to the ending.
This is no happy tale and takes several dark turns. I can see why so many have praised this book.
One quote that stuck with me comes from the young prophet in the story, Jack.
“Heaven’s part of the code. It just means, a good place for us all to live.”

4.5 if I could give halves (pls Goodreads). I went in blind and it took an unexpected turn in storyline and even genre from what I expected. A VERY quick read. I love the modern take on religion from a science standpoint. Provides good mental fodder as a young person thinking about global warming
I'm just not gonna force myself to finish this. If there was a free audiobook somewhere maybe. It was sold to me as a literary horror and it's not horror enough and nothing happens
This book was not for me. It felt very heavy handed with the metaphors. I get the point the book was trying to make and think it’s a good message, but it was so un-subtle about it I was rolling my eyes far too many times. The parents were absolutely idiotic, which I think was the part of the point, but it felt beyond believable. And the children came off as pretentious at so many points. “We blame you for everything” yeah, yeah I get it…
