Sitting in the back of the social worker's car, I try to remember how my mother has always said to never show your fear.
Carley Connors has been released from the hospital and is on her way to a foster family. In flashbacks, we learn how she came to be in the hospital. Carley has never known a truly loving family and it very suspicious of the Murphy family. She does not realize that a child can be loved and cared for in the manner that Julie Murphy cares for her. The three boys in the family were expecting the foster child to be a boy. Daniel, the oldest, is resentful of Carley's presence. The youngest, Michael Eric, loves unconditionally. Toni, a school friend, shows Carley that people do look out for each other.
This was a heartbreaking story that I read in one sitting. The changes that Carley made with the help of the Murphys and Toni was so special. It was so difficult to see the choices she made but the lessons learned were excellent. The last couple of chapters had me crying.
Child abuse is so horrid. The role that her mother played in the abuse was sickening. I wanted the ending to be a little different but understand the reason.
4.5 stars!

This is one I'll definitely be rereading! I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. A strong and sad book - very powerful!
It was cute! It felt a little too young for me, but I guess that makes sense because it was in the juvenile section of my local library and not the YA section. It jumped around the timeline a little too much and it was missing a lot of content that could have really added so much to the plot and the characters, but overall, I liked it!
This was an amazing book. I could barely put it down and read it in a couple of hours. The ending had me being very emotional. This is a great read for anyone
Read in an hour and a half. Great book that left me in tears.
Such a touching book. Ending broke my heart, though. Would share this with my more mature fourth graders. It's an emotional read!
Keep a full box o' Kleenex nearby while reading this one. What a devastating book - a harrowing look at the emotional roller coaster that is the foster care system, for both foster child and foster family. I heard about this book via mock Newbery lists, and I think this will appeal to the same reader base that liked Okay for Now.
In the midst of all of that emotion, I was very fond of the musical theatre-obsessed Toni. She was a standout character.

Great book about a foster kid with lots of feelings. I was surprised and impressed by the ending.
There's really not much too say this book was absolutely amazing. It made me laugh it made me cry. I would totally consider this one of my favorite contemporary books by far!!!!
