Bit of an overhyped book. Appreciated the nods to Jane Eyre (even though I never liked the novel), but the story’s shock factor was just lacking. None of the characters were likable in a way that made their ability to manipulate people using charm very unbelievable.
I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT!!!! 10/10
Couldn’t put this book down once I started! I love the way this author writes and uses multiple point of views but still easy to follow. Gosh loved this book!

A quick read, but I would not call this a thriller. Very little suspense throughout the book, some plot twists at the end but more of an unreliable narrator(s) way than actual thrill. Admittedly have not read Jane Eyre, which this is supposedly an adaptation of, but I’m not sure that that context would’ve helped or made it better. More of a romance with a plot twist than a true thriller.
3.5 stars because the ending didn't feel right to me.
I was pretty turned off in the beginning of the book when Jane meets Eddie Rochester in Thornfield Estates (check the title if that wasn't laid out thickly enough). But I trust Hawkins and I'm always rewarded. It turns out this was very straightforwardly a modernization of Jane Eyre, so I'll allow it! There are just enough subversions that you feel like you're in good, smart hands.
Recommendation from TikTok but also the fourth Hawkins book I've read.

This was a short, enjoyable read. The ending was a little predictable, but that didn’t bother me much. The only thing I really didn’t love about this book was some of the prose. It felt a little clunky reading it sometimes, and the use of present tense when things seemed past tense was kind of strange to me.
An interesting retelling of the original Jane Eyre tale, replete with recognizable character and location names. The narrative switches viewpoints to reveal parts of the plot that happened before the book started. Overall, it was an okay domestic thriller, more understandable if you're a Jane Eyre fan, but honestly, I could not like any character. None of them had any redeemable qualities or made me like them or want to root for them.
Oh my goodness!!!! I loved this book. Quick and easy read to get me out of my small reading slump. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a mystery and I loved every second of it.
While the story was slightly predictable, I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Jane was a great main character. She had major flaws which made her realistic. She was thrown into a fairytale life that was too good to be true.
Wonderfully written. Kept me intrigued the entire time.

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins, was undoubtedly one of my most anticipated thrillers of this year and although it didn't leave me gasping for my breath, the rather unconventional and surprising ending certainly took me off guard.
A modern retelling of Jane Eyre, THE WIFE UPSTAIRS, is what I would categorize as a cozy and quick mystery perfect for a one-time read. Driven by manipulative characters, The Wife Upstairs follows the mysterious disappearance of two bestfriends of Thornfield Estates—a gated community in Birmingham. Jane, running from her own past finds herself in the midst of Thornfield, and takes up the job as a dogwalker looking for a fresh start.
The story substantially narrated by Jane, who ticks all the boxes for an unreliable narrator, jazzes it up with a sense of foreboding and kept me glued. Every character looks out for his own and if that isn't the definition of a wicked and authentic mystery I don't know what is!
