don't read this if you hold "jane eyre" dear to you.
tense fast-paced

I found this book entertaining but I really didn’t like the ending

I don't like "Jane Eyre", so I shouldn't be surprised that I didn't love this thriller, but at least the original had a thematic complexity which this shallow take lacked. In particular, the characters were one-dimensional as well as unlikeable - even though Bea/Jane/Eddie went through hardships that should draw the reader's sympathies, their acting as though they were entitled to anything resulted in me caring very little about the outcome of the sordid love triangle they developed. The only character I emphatized with was Adele the prop dog who thankfully was not accidentally roasted due to her owners' self-absorbtion. In addition, despite also copying liberally from "Rebecca" (e.g., the boating accident, the rooms haunted by the first wife's things, rewearing a similar outfit), Hawkins doesn't quite manage to capture any kind of gothic vibe, leaving the overall tone weirdly upbeat for the body count. And finally, regarding the plot - the ending was utterly unbelievable. If you assume they're alive, a duo as greedy and unremorsefully murderous as Eddie and Bea would never allow Jane to just get their money, even in exchange for their freedom. If you assume they're dead, well that's a just comeuppance but boring.

Didn’t feel particularly gothic/dark. I don’t remember Jane Eyre but the references are in-your-face obvious. This story is much more superficial and light, bordering on farcical.

Updated version of Jane Eyre but this Jane protagonist has little to recommend her. Not a very inspired sense of writing either. Ho hum.

This is a modernization of Jane Eyre. Some of it was really good, but overall the story was uneven. There is a twisty, suspenseful plot, but none of the characters are particularly likeable. The story leaves questions unanswered in places. Overall, it was entertaining to read.

*This review is based on the audiobook.*

This will be a short review as I don't want to waste anymore of my time on this book since it already wasted a week of my life.

I honestly don't get the point. Everyone is rating this so high and it just felt like a major waste of time.

There was maybe one twist that I didn't guess but even that couldn't save it.

I didn't like any of the characters and there was nothing exciting or engaging about the story; I just kept going in the hope it would improve.

Utterly pointless.

This was basically as close to being what it says on the tin as possible.

There are no real surprises, nothing I didn't just guess on my own, at least, and honestly, by the end, it all felt a little pointless, a big foregone conclusion. I just kept waiting for things to pick up, for something else to happen, for the mystery to get more mysterious, but it just never did.

The prose is also really plain, very straightforward. I really feel like Rachel Hawkins just copied Gillian Flynn and Colleen Hoover's homework and didn't really even try to pass any of it off as her own work. All in all, a pretty big waste of time. Definitely won't be keeping my copy.
