For all the pride and prejudice fanfiction this was the first Jane Eyre I’ve read, and it was so good! Suspenseful with plenty of homages to the original, and a satisfying ending.

This book confirms that writing a thriller based so heavily on two well-known classics kills its suspense. It's fine for mindless entertainment, but if you are looking for thrills and are familiar with Jane Eyre, I'd say give it a miss.

I thought this story was ok, just ok. None of the characters were that likable and I had a hard time relating to them. They’re either scheming to get ahead, committing crimes, or lying. I also felt like some of story lines were pointless or left me with more questions. I’m not sure what was the point of going into Jane’s past but I thought it was a waste of time. I was waiting for that big ah-ha moment where everything made sense, but it never came.

I also didn’t like this sentence and it really turned me off:

“Tripp is so many ugly things—a drunk, a lech, a Republican—but murderer still doesn’t fit on him.”

I read books to escape from the realities of life. If I want to talk politics then I’ll turn the on the news or surf facebook…I took away one star from my review due to that sentence.

Listened to the audiobook. Very easy and fast listen. I really enjoyed it and liked that you heard from 3 peoples perspective

3.5 stars for me. This was an easy, fast paced read with some plot twists fairly easy to guess. Not an "edge of your seat" thriller by any stretch.

I really enjoyed The Wife Upstairs! At fIrst, I thought it was going to be a cliche, run of the mill domestic thriller, but I got so much more. I didn't expect any of the events that happened the last quarter of the book. The characters were interesting and the setting delightfully southern. I would definitely recommend. Thank you, NetGalley, for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I have feelings. I'm not entirely sure what they are.

On the one hand, this is a quick read and a great study in suspense. On the other, I had a hard time adjusting to the idea of Jane Eyre/Bell as a kleptomaniac. Granted it's been A WHILE since I've read the original. I will say that if this were a Reddit AmITheAsshole post, the response would be Everyone'sShittyHere.

I have a feeling there are quite a few subtle things I'm missing because it's been FOREVER since I read the original. I liked the nod of Jane having the last name Bell since that's a pen name for Charlotte Bronte. I remember a lot of the names from the book but not who the characters actually were. Using the foster care system rather than an orphanage was excellent--and apt.

Spoiler I suppose I wanted to be freer to root for Jane, but it was hard because she, Eddie, and Be a were all manipulators. Or if I couldn't root for Jane, I wanted to root for Bea. From a technical standpoint, the twist is delicious, but...Bertha always deserved better, too.
