This isn't my favorite book by Gaiman but it is a darkly charming collection of short stories. Whether his story is completely original or based on older fairy tales and nursery rhymes, Gaiman always seems to come up with something unique and worth reading. I particularly enjoy a story which (if I remember right) is called Troll Bridge.
So well written, stories that have stuck in my mind. I keep trying to retell them (poorly) because I want to share this lovely, haunting feeling I have after hearing every one.
in Gaiman's style - really good stories, scary stories, stories which don't seem to have a point until they do... It is not one of my favourite of his but even his not-as-goods are really good.

I admit I skimmed a review where someone complained this collection isn't for kids. It doesn't claim to be for kids. It does claim to be a YA collection & that isn't the same thing as kids. There were some other complaints including the length of the introduction & that the stories included appeared in other books first. All I can say to that is if that person had read the introduction they wouldn't have been surprised at the lack of original content. But it's been years since I've read Smoke & Mirrors and Instructions so I decided to listen anyway. Plus I really do love How to Talk to Girls at Parties.
For my review I tired to review these 1 by 1. But it got repetitive and boring to write. Other than the first story, the weird mashup of noir and Mother Goose, I really like all of the stories picked for the collection. My favorites being Sunbird, Instructions and Chivalry. And of course How To Talk To Girls At Parties too.
As far as the audiobook goes I love Gaiman's narration but the musical interludes are too loud and remind me of elevator music in the worst way possible.

This was overall a pretty disappointing collection. Half the stories in here have since been re-published in his other short story anthologies, which I think is ridiculous. If you are consistently publishing anthologies that feature only your own short stories then you shouldn't have repeats. If you don't have enough new material then wait until you do! I guess technically the low rating should go on the later anthologies but since I've read them out of order the rant goes here.
Also the last fifth of the book is just an excerpt of The Graveyard Book which ...again, this was published before that book but it still seems lazy. And I hate that story with the black cat. As a cat owner it makes me very sad. Nothing really special here and if you have read / are planning to read his other anthologies I would just entirely skip this one because there isn't a lot of new content and the stuff that is here is not particularly good or original anyway.

I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but this book makes me want to start giving them a second chance.
