Psychological thriller reminiscent of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. A quick binge read.
After escaping New York city to live with her sister, Rosie, Laura Lochner decides to take a stab at the online dating world. She has spent her entire life haunted by a tragedy that happened when she was younger and because of it, has never had the best luck when it comes to love.
Rosie, who lives in Connecticut with her husband and son, has always been looking out for her sister. When Laura doesn’t return from her first blind date with a man, she begins to worry. Not only is Rosie worried about what the man may have done to Laura, but what Laura may have done to him…
The Night Before kept me guessing until almost the very end with plenty of twists and turns along the way. I loved the back and forth between Laura while she was on her date and Rosie as she is looking for her sister, as well as some short flashbacks to when Laura was seeing a therapist. Laura is very unreliable and makes plenty of questionable decisions, while Rosie is the protective older sister that just wants the best for Laura. While unable to really connect with any of the characters, I enjoyed their dynamic and look forward to reading more from Walker!

I understand building suspense but, there’s also dragging it out so long that the reader loses interest and doesn’t even care anymore. This is what happened for me. I just wanted it to be over.

I am so behind on reviewing books for Netgalley and amazing authors like Wendy Walker that it’s sad. I finished this in one day and look forward to reading more from Ms. Walker. Here is a bit about the story. Laura and her sister, Rosie, along with Joe and Gabe, all grew up in the same neighborhood, tight friends from early childhood. Rosie and Joe are now married with a toddler, and Gabe has married. After her most recent relationship ends badly, Laura moves into her sister's home to recover. It isn't long before she connects with "Jonathan," a man from an online site and agrees to a date. When she doesn't return home the next morning, Rosie fears the worst. What sets this book apart for me is that Laura isn’t just concerned for her sister but for “Johnathon” as well. I love a book that has two points and gives you the complete twisty picture. With this book you get the added sessions with her physiatrist. I don’t want to give too much of the story away. I will say The Night Before is unique and worth the time to read.

Honestly from the moment I saw this and I requested. I knew it screamed out read me . Which when it happens I know I’m going to enjoy it. You’ll love me and be engaged with me. It engaging and interesting. Laura was interesting character , it was awesome to see how psychologically stuff can just impact someone. This goes for every character. It was twisted and the writing made me want to keep on reading. I’m so glad that I read it. I have no regrets on doing so. I could definitely read this over and over again just to see if I could have found more clues on what lead up to the ending. Definitely amazing read.
What a wild ride! I was totally gripped - The Night Before was such a page turner!
Laura is unlucky in love and haunted by a teenage tragedy that has defined her life. She always seems to choose the wrong men. Determined to give love (and herself) one more chance, Laura returns to her childhood suburb and joins an internet dating site. She has an immediate connection with one man from the site and decides to meet him for a blind date. Nervous and excited, Laura walks out of her sister Rosie's house to meet up with her date and doesn't return. Rosie begins a frantic search to find her sister and uncover what really happened to Laura the night before.
Told from the alternating perspectives of both Laura and Rosie, The Night Before gripped me from the onset and never let go. The more you read, the more you question everything and everyone. The pacing of the book left my pulse racing as the suspense (and my anxiety) mounted. I found myself weaving plausible (and implausible) theory after theory. Wendy Walker definitely kept both the tension and suspicion levels high throughout the book!
The Night Before is a well crafted, riveting and thoroughly entertaining thriller that I have no hesitation in recommending! Cozy up, grab snacks and dig in my friends - this is one you won't want to miss. 🥰
Thank you to Wendy Walker, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an arc of this book.

This is the first book I have read by this author. I enjoyed it and it left me guessing until the end. There were some things that seemed more confusing than they needed to be because of the way the story was told but it gave you both sides of the story without giving anything away. I liked the character of Rosie but Laura was not as compelling. I know that is on purpose, and I changed my mind by the end of the book but it still left a mark. Overall, a good read.
I went into this book at bedtime, thinking I would read for a short while then go to sleep. Next thing I know it’s 2 a.m. and I have to force myself to put the book down. What.a.ride! 🙌🏼

Twelve hours earlier, she was...
Hopeful.
Excited.
Safe.
Now she's gone.

That synopsis was all the info I had going into the book. I was intrigued and completely hooked from page one. This is a gripping, white knuckled roller coaster ride of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it figured out the author threw another twist at me. Fast paced and intense, this is a fun ride. If you love psychological suspense and thrillers told with an unreliable narrator, then this is the book for you! Thank you @stmartinspress for this advance reader in exchange for my honest review.

After a bad break-up, Laura leaves New York City, and goes to stay with her sister, Rosie, and Rosie’s husband, Joe, back in her hometown of Branson, Connecticut. Laura has always been unlucky in love, constantly haunted by a tragic event from her past. When Laura takes a chance on a blind date from a dating website, but does not return home by the next morning, Rosie worries about what happened the night before.
The novel is told from the alternating perspectives of Laura from the night before, and her sister Rosie in the present day, along with dialogue from Laura’s therapy sessions a few months prior. The book has you questioning who is not what they seem, and what secrets people are hiding. I had previously read and loved Wendy Walker’s newest novel, Don’t Look for Me, and this was another solid thriller that did not disappoint! I look forward to reading Walker’s other novels.

This book was perfect for what it was! A classic thriller with a good twist, and a quick read. I finished the whole thing in about one day. It was light and fast paced. Plus, I always enjoy a book that flips between a current character and a past character to get to what happened.
