I just finished The Night Before, and it was spectacular entertainment. My initial thought was “Oh, noooo, not another thriller like this..." But I stuck around to see what would happen, and I’m so glad I did.
“The Night Before” by Wendy Walker is full of twists and turns and more twists and turns, and as a self-proclaimed professional book detective, I did not guess this ending. And now I want all of my fellow thriller fans to read this to see if they guess the ending because maybe I’m just out of practice.
Laura moves in with her sister’s family after her seemingly perfect boyfriend unexpectedly dumps her and breaks her heart. She’s starting over and trying to get herself back into the dating world, and she tries out a dating website to meet some men who have been in a similar walk of life as herself.
And she’s heading out to get drinks with a new guy who seems like a good fit... but doesn’t come home that night. Or the next day.
The reader follows Laura and Laura’s sister, Rosie, and retraces everyone’s steps to figure out where Laura is and what happened to her... and as soon as everything seems to fall into place, everything comes unhinged again.
This was great fun and I’m so thankful to St. Martin's Press for sending me a copy to review! Thank you, thank you!
Add this to your summer reads list for some fast-paced entertainment that will blow your mind.

I loved it. The type of book you read in one sitting and keeps you up late into the night :)

This was a weird one. Definitely fast paced and engaging but the characters all felt very flat, so I couldn’t really get invested in the story. I wish there had been more of a psychological element like in Emma in the Night, which I loved!

Shocker!

I loved this book! It starts with Laura and her getting reading for a date but the next chapter you are with her sister Rosie and it's the morning after. You then interchange between the 2 views along with the odd therapy session with Laura from several months before. This is the kind of book I love with secrets coming out and the author giving you the chance to come to your own conclusion only to pull the rug from under your feet as the truth is revealed.

✨Laura is trying to heal from her sordid past and is going on her first date with a man she met online. When she hasn’t come home the next day, her sister Rosie imagines the worst case scenarios. Who exactly is this man she met online? Did someone get hurt?

The Night Before by Wendy Walker was the story of Laura, a girl diving back into the dating world, and she goes missing.
This isn’t your typical missing girl story though and that’s why I liked it! Laura herself can be dangerous if her past has any say in the matter.
You’ll be guessing throughout the entire book about who’s the guilty party and who’s an innocent bystander.
I liked Laura right away and the way her mind was scattered and how she questioned everything. It kept you on edge as a reader trying to figure her out and how her mind worked.
Rosie, Laura’s sister, was a little harder for me to enjoy. She was needy to me and I didn’t jive well with her character.
The chapters are split between Laura’s perspective and Rosie’s perspective along with a page thrown in with a conversation between Laura and her shrink. Those pages were so vague, leaving you with a lot more questions than answers and I loved that.
Overall, the story was gripping, it had me thinking, and I truly didn’t see the end coming. There were a few things I wish could have been wrapped up a little clearer, but nothing that took away from the overall greatness of this book.

Thanks to NetGalley for the arc to review!

So I really wanted to like this one. I enjoyed Walker's previous work, Emma in the Night, and thought this one would hit the same buttons. Sadly, it did not.

I did enjoy the set-up of the novel. The story bounces between Laura as she moves through her date and Rosie, who is dealing with the aftermath the next day. The reveals corresponded well between the perspectives/timelines and I think they paired together nicely. Rosie's sections were a great deal more interesting to me. Laura had me... annoyed. Her sections were boring to me, filled with annoying chatter and repetitive musings. She ignored so many red flags it became irritating and completely unrealistic and her 'not like other girls' attitude was tiresome.

I ended up dnfing this book at 45%. I couldn't push through any further. I think that many thriller fans could appreciate and enjoy this book but it just didn't do it for me.

This is a story told in alternating points of view between two sisters, Laura and Rosie. Laura has had a rough life, always struggling to find a man to love her. She meets a man and falls in love with him and he breaks up with her via text message. Laura then abruptly leaves her entire life behind in NYC to move back to Connecticut to live with her sister’s family. She starts her pattern over again, looking online for love and ultimately ends up going on a date. One problem though, she doesn’t come home! Rosie is worried that something has happened to Laura. Where is she? Is she hurt? Or did she hurt someone else, perhaps?

❼❺% of this book made me crazy, but in the best way! I had no clue what was going on, coming up with all kinds of theories. I was immediately sucked in. My head was spinning this way and that, going in circles, trying to figure out what happened to Laura. Or did Laura happen to someone else?

The storyline was like a bunch of puzzle pieces 🧩 and the reader is left to make them all fit together. I love a book that makes my brain 🧠 work really hard to figure out the truth and this story did just that.

An interesting aspect to this story for me was the idea of online dating, and how many creepy fish 🐠 are in the sea! I met my boyfriend on an online dating site and we’ve been together for almost 9 years. It’s so important to be cautious while going on a date with someone you never met and you don’t know much about. Like, you don’t even know for sure if they gave their real name. I can’t say that I was always as diligent as I should have been, but Laura sure wasn’t. I mean who goes on a date with a stranger and doesn’t make sure their cell phone is charged?! She did all the wrong things, even when her gut was telling her not to. It’s still believable though, because it happens a lot in real life.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, fun read that keeps you guessing, check this one out! I really enjoyed it and look forward to more twisty, thrillery goodness by Wendy Walker!
