The novel felt very much like the story it was written about… the first half was personal and exciting, but simple in writing; while the second half was beautiful and poetic, but I felt farther away. Whether that was intentional or just the way I connected to the novel, I enjoyed that layer of the story.
It’s not a story that will evoke big emotions and take you on a rollercoaster, but it is comfortable and comfortable is nice to have when the world is not right now.

E' questo che l'autrice, in forma epistolare, in poche parole ci racconta.
Detto così è banale e non lo è per nulla.
La voce narrante e istigatrice della ricerca è Anne-Lise. In vacanza con la famiglia, con una notte insonne davanti e senza un libro da leggere dato che lo ha dimenticato a casa si ritrova a frugare nella stanza e scova un manoscritto dimenticato nel cassetto di un comodino. La storia l'appassiona così tanto da rimanerne colpita e riesce a contattare, alla fine, lo scrittore che però le risponde che lo aveva smarrito trent'anni prima!
Inizia così la ricerca e, passo dopo passo, lettera dopo lettera si instaura una relazione di amicizia tra i diversi personaggi che hanno avuto tra le mani il manoscritto, una serie di persone che in qualche modo sono stati aiutati dalla lettura. Dietro una scorrevolissima storia però si nascondono storie tristi, di perdite familiari che hanno portato all'isolamento, attacchi di panico che disgregano famiglie facendo isolare chi ne è affetto; la malattia che anche in questo caso fa allontanare dai ricordi e dalla vita.
La solitudine è una costante di questa storia che però grazie all'unione ma soprattutto all'amore, nelle sue diverse sfaccettature, viene superata.
La storia avvicina ad ogni personaggio, tutti ben caratterizzati. Ma la più divertente e coinvolgente è proprio Anne-Lise, quella testarda che potrebbe passare per antipatica ma non lo è, è solo determinata a portare a termine ogni lavoro che fa, ogni impegno e questo della ricerca è uno di quei compiti.

Una bella storia, che ho letto velocemente grazie, soprattutto, ai capitoli brevi, sotto forma di lettera, che stimolano la curiosità e ad andare avanti per sapere cosa verrà risposto nelle lettere successive. L'unico piccolissimo appunto è che, dato gli innumerevoli personaggi, ogni tanto mi dovevo fermare a riflettere prima di iniziare la lettura, per ricordare a che punto si era arrivati con le risposte precedenti.

For me it was a great book to lose myself in, as I followed the lives that also got wrapped up in the journey/mystery of the lost manuscript.

J'adore les romans épistolaires. Et celui ci est vraiment bien. J'ai passé de bons moments avec tout les personnages.
Comprised of only letters, and a few emails, this translation from the French text is eloquently written. The characters are surprisingly well developed considering the reader only gets to know them by reading their correspondence. The story has twists and turns I never expect when uncovering a mystery of a lost manuscript. However, while the manuscript and its author are the car that drive us through the story... the real story is about how the manuscript impacted the lives of its readers. The core of this book is the love for books themselves. It is a love letter to books and the characters that touch our hearts every time we pick up a novel.
I recommend this for a light, quick read. It’s cute, a little dramatic, and honestly a bit silly at the effort the main character goes through just to solve this mystery.

What a charming little novel this was! I received it in a subscription box and had very few expectations of it, and that made all of the difference. I had just DNF'd a wildly popular book that I had been particularly looking forward to and then immediately regretted, and this was the perfect way back to a good reading experience. And not just for the novel and the characters, the style or the setting. But just the clear love that it espouses for the beauty of a well-turned phrase, the power of a story, the importance of reading.
In fact, I even decided fairly early on to pick up a pencil and underline a number of passages that I wanted to share with others. I usually am very picky about keeping my books in pristine condition and so rarely give in to this temptation, but I did so this time, and am very glad that I did. If nothing else, it feels quite in keeping with the novel's themes of healthy alone-ness but also that of coming together as readers to celebrate a manuscript.
The first quote I underlined was: 'When I read your words, I felt that slight shiver we feel when the lines we're reading seem to have been written just for us.' And the final one was: 'I am one of those people who cannot savour the present unless they have kept a fragment, forever nestled in the heart of their memories.' And as a dedicated keeper of mementos, often in book form, I can agree with another poignant quote, that 'characters on paper can modify our memories and remain forever at our sides.'
I cannot guarantee that these beautiful reading souls will those that touch me forever, but it was just nice and comforting to be reminded that this is what ink on paper can do for us.
