É com certeza de terror, que me lembrou muito a história de Chapeuzinho Vermelho, principalmente a versão de Angela Carter, Companhia de Lobos. Adorei. Gosto muito de versões diferentes de contos de fadas.

Moreno-Garcia had me entranced from the beginning of this short story. The plot was thick with emotion, and the characters were well-developed in the areas needed to tell the story. The twist at the end got me, and it was a welcomed surprise. Overall - I really enjoyed this work.

“The name doesn’t matter. You know me. I have no silks or gold, but I’d promise to eat your enemy’s heart and tear their lungs out with my claws in exchange for your kiss, dear Judith, which is more than a prince could say.”
And that’s IT. Nothing less.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for this advanced copy.
The Lover by Silvia Moreno-Garcia had so much potential! A magical Little Red Riding Hood retelling … yes, please!! However, as a short story, it did not do anything for me.
I found myself frustrated in the beginning as things the pace and scenarios were moving so rapidly it almost didn’t make sense. A certain phrase was repeated several times and it took me a minute to realize the repetition was done intentionally and not by mistake. I mean, I should have realized that, but with ARCs sometimes the reader DOES catch errors like that. Towards the end of the story, I knew what was going to happen, but then the story just ended. Poof! Just like that! The ending felt very abrupt and the entire plot line felt way too rushed and thrown together. It only took me about 1.5 hours to read, but I think so much more could have been done with this story as a full length novel instead of a short story.

This book was written in second-person, which is really unusual. It was a little difficult to get used to, because it felt like the main character was speaking to themselves in the narration. I think this is the only book I've ever read that is written entirely in second-person. But, getting past that, this book is amazing. The characters feel real and the situations are heartbreakingly evoked. Complicated emotions are handled delicately and adeptly. The world created here is one that gives the reader hope for the future.
