Typical sci fi. Fun ideas, some poignant moments but generally shitty writing and characters. The short stories format plays to the strengths and means you get lots of the ideas and care less for the characters and dialogue. Half of the stories usually contain a conversation or monologue that just explain the idea of the story lol. Fairly clunky.
There's no bad story either although they vary in how much I enjoyed them.

While Cixin's habit of giving characters long speeches that act as giant info-dumps becomes even more obvious while reading this collection of short stories, I was still utterly enthralled by the interweaving of hugely diverse elements from multiple fantastic traditions. And the eponymous "The Wandering Earth" may be the best sf story I've ever read.

This is my first Liu Cixin read and my first Chinese Sci-Fi and my God, it is a breath of fresh air. The short stories involve so much of Chinese culture and feels so close to home, but also so far away. I've never read anything like it before. Also, not all of the stories are dystopian or bloody. It is a really good read especially if you're new to science fiction.

I considered not giving this five stars, as there are a couple of the stories that fall a bit flat, with one being very unimpressive in themes, but the concepts of hard sci fi explored in the rest of the stories mean I can't resist, the first four especially. The title story is sublime and clearly meant to be the main concept, but I personally enjoyed the exaggeration of classism and capitalism running through The Wages Of Humanity even more. Heavily recommended.

After reading (and loving) Liu Cixin's The Three Body Problem and the other two books in the series, I decided to give The Wandering Earth, a collection of short stories a try.

I am glad that I did as I enjoyed all eleven stories in the collection.
