My mother got me this book for Jolabokaflod and needless to say, I hated it. It's absurd, depressing, and it's humour is subpar, at best. At least three people are suicidal the whole way through, and one of them is the reader.

This book had been recommended to me, and I kept putting it at the bottom of my to-read pile. I was afraid it would be depressing, and the character’s anxiety disorder would be too much after the months of pandemic. I really liked this book, and liked Gilda, the main character. Although she is a mess, I could find under her many struggles, a compassion for those around her - even those she didn’t really know - a desire to eliminate sadness/pain in their lives, even denying herself in the process. The glimpse into her family of origin, and her experiences as a child made me empathize with her as a young adult. The author’s observations on the many ways people hide their truths from others was real and insightful.
