Just loved

I didn't expect to give below 3 stars but if I'm basing myself off Goodreads' description, then "it was ok". I don't think that the book deserves such polarized opinions and ratings. It wasn't that bad, but at the end of it, it doesn't feel like the various chapters come together as one piece.

Il libro è molto scollegato, senza una trama di fondo. Più che la storia di Jane, sono frammenti della sua vita. Questo ha penalizzato molto la lettura del libro. La cosa che però mi è rimasta, è il rapporto tra Jane e suo padre.

I really liked Jane's little one liners and honest depiction of life, with all its awkward, honest, and sad pieces. If the whole book was stories that were the quality of the last one (with the same name as the title), it would have been 5 stars. I also was annoyed at the random, unconnected story in the middle narrated by the neighbor, and some of them dragged on a bit, while others seemed a little cut short. Read it for the prose. Forgive it for the structure.

This book was a very easy read for me and I finished it in two sittings. The book is composed of many different excerpts of Jane's life, which kept it interesting, but left me hanging a little bit. Truthfully, at the end of the novel, I didn't feel like I really knew Jane. After putting the book down for an evening and picking up the next day, I had a difficult time remembering what had happened in the last chapter/story since the two did not necessarily posess any common links. I thought Jane was cute, funny, and real (for the most part), but I personally enjoy a more continuous storyline.

There is no doubt in my mind, however, that Banks is a very talented writer. There were many times that I laughed out-loud, noticed her changing writing-style, and didn't want to put down the book. The individual stories themselves were great, but the whole big picture and "lesson"? Hm...So-so.

I loved the writing and characters in this book. A slice of life-style narrative.

I was really looking forward to this book because I loved The Wonder Spot by the same author, and this book was a letdown. I felt that it lacked the substance, reality, and life humor that her other book so richly had.

It was ok - a fast read and would be good for vacation reading or something like that. But in the middle there was a chapter involving completely unrelated (as far as I could tell) characters and I never could figure out why it was there. Very weird.

Refreshing and quirky.
