An oft untold story about adoption, with the central thesis shirking other tales that adoption is all trauma or all sunshine. The banter is witty and the chapters are written in a way that makes you always say - just one more. There are some plot points that require you to suspend disbelief, but overall it’s a well-developed story.
I think this one will make an excellent book club pick with much to discuss.

Audiobook/Kindle. I love her writing style, and how she portrays quirky and off beat characters. The dialogue is excellent! India was a little over the top in her ideals.
This is a very ambitious novel and I appreciate that the author sought to de-stigmatize adoption. I found myself disagreeing with a lot of the main character’s decisions and in the end I don’t think I really liked her. However, I liked how the author wrote such vivid characters - some I liked, some I didn’t understand, but they all felt real to me. I especially enjoy Frankel’s sense of humor - often subtle, sometimes poignant. I listened to this book and the narrator was great, but sometimes I had a hard time following what was happening, but I think that’s par for the course when novels jump around in time like this one does. This book made me think about my own opinions and biases and beliefs many times. This is what I love about reading and I look forward to discussing this book with my fellow reader friends someday!

This story had promise, but as it progressed it grew less and less believable, and the main character became less and less likeable, so I struggled to push to the end. Any message or point the author was attempting to make about adoption was lost in the increasingly ridiculous plot, especially towards the end. And if I had to read about the main character ripping up a card and using it as confetti one more time (it was cute the first time, but not the subsequent times), this may have been a DNF.
What a beautiful story about family and how just because your family is different or doesn't fit the stereotype of "normal" doesn't make it weird or wrong but all families can be lovely.
