After starting a stopping a number of books the past few weeks I was excited to find Laurie Frankel’s Family Family on the library shelf. I totally loved the book which sort of surprised me. I enjoyed her previous books as she writes about families and those are my go-to sort of books.
What I really liked about this book - I found the main character India to be a little much at times but I kept thinking “she’s kooky, nutty and it works. The book dealt with the topic of adoption and what makes a family. Yet it manages to be funny at times and never “tragic sad” Halfway through I totally knew everyone India has ever been involved with was going to wind up in one place but it was a fun journey.
One of the best of 2024 for me so far.

Laurie Frankel does it again. Another completely engrossing story, with fully realized characters and backstories. LF does seem to love her a precocious kid and often writes them a little bit young (Fig and Jack are more like 7 than 10 year olds; Bex feels more like a 13/14 than a 16), but I think that's part of the charm of her characters and stories. I love how she takes very fraught, complex topics - in this case, what it truly means to be pro-choice, and an in-depth exploration of adoption - and explores them in very emotionally charged but still incredibly factual, realistic ways. For every bit of fantasticism, there is a grounded sense of reality running through it. In the running for one of my favorite reads of the year (unsurprising, since This Is How It Always Is held that title, too).

Heartwarming story about adoption and all the sides of it. Got a little complicated at times.
Another five star read from one of my favorite authors, with a cast of unique characters and a story that was charming and quirky and heartwarming and eye-opening from beginning to end.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel.

I love the way that Laurie Frankel writes about families. This book gave me all the feelings, but most of all, I loved the evident love in all the relationships.

This book is for anyone touched by the adoption triad who doesn’t see representation of adoption other than trauma and loss. For this adoptive mama in waiting, it was the exact right book for me right now. I would recommend this book to anyone!
