To what length would you go to save your child?
Pick it up you want read a mystery story line with unique concept, fast paced with short chapters.
I don't remember who recommended this for 12 by 12 challenge, but when I went in and read the blurb I was like okay! This sounds interesting I should read this one and hence read this. A totally new author to me but with storyline I did go in with certain expectations & I did enjoy reading it.
The story starts with Kylie getting kidnapped with a knife by a woman & a man when she is waiting for her school bus. And Rachel, Kylie's mom gets a call stating her daughter has been kidnapped & needs to pay a certain ransom using crypto transactions & kidnap a another child for Kylie to be released. Because you see Kylie was kidnapped by the mom of boy who is been kidnapped by some other parents. For them to release that boy they had to kidnap someone's child & they choose Kylie.
You get the drift rite? This a chain reaction kidnapping.
A simple concept of kidnapping & getting ransoms but you don't get actually involved on ground & stay behind the screens directing every move of the parents.
On a thursday morning Rachel Klien is on the way to see her oncologist when she gets the call. And from that moment she does everything that she had never dreamed of doing with one singular focus of getting her daughter back. The part I of the story spans for four days form 7:55 A.M thursday to 6:00 A.M monday; which shows how Rachel kidnaps a another child to get Kylie back.
The second part of story is where she tries to find who is behind this whole operation because it has weighed down on both hers & Kylie's mental health & disrupted theri life. And she really can't fully investigate because the chain is watching; if something happens the whole thing is going to backfire like chain reaction backwards. So how does she do it forms the rest of book.
Honestly the only think I didn't like about the book was towards the end it was dragged. Other than that definitely a worth a read for its writing & storyline.

Darn it. I really wanted to read this, swoon & write a glowing review. Alas, it’s not to be. I assumed it would be a sure thing as I’m a HUGE fan of the author’s other books. His Sean Duffy books remain one of my favourite all time series. And maybe that’s the problem.
If i’d received this book with an anonymous cover & been asked to guess the author, McKinty’s name would never have crossed my mind. This is a complete departure from anything else he’s written. The style of writing is so different & his signature wit is completely absent. The plot is original & horrifyingly creepy but it’s one of those books you really need to suspend your disbelief to enjoy & I think I lack the imagination to just shut down my logical side & go along for the ride. In this particular genre, I have to believe the characters are capable of their roles.
But it’s a layered work & if you’re a philosophy buff, it can be enjoyed on another level. The author clearly draws from his own scholarly background. There are references to some of the great thinkers & their theories are reflected in the main character of Rachel who is slowly redefined by her actions.
I recently read an interview McKinty gave to The Guardian. I was shocked to learn he & his family had been evicted from their home & he was driving for Uber to make ends meet. Just goes to show how tough the industry is when best selling authors are unable to make a living. So he’s headed off in a new direction & who can blame the guy?
You’ll notice I haven’t mentioned any details about the story. There’s no need. The characters are all fresh & the blurb tells you everything you need to know. So while it didn’t work for me, it’s probably just a combination of my preconceptions & simple reader/book mismatch. It’s hugely popular & there are many 5 star reviews out there so give those a look & take this one with a grain of salt. McKinty is a gifted story teller & I sincerely hope this is a screaming success so he can get back to writing full time.

I had the potential to really enjoy this book because of how unique the plot was, but the dialogue completely ruined it for me. It's been a long time since I've ready something with such cringe worthy dialogue. It just didn't feel like real people talking to each other; especially the teenage daughter. It felt like the author had never interacted with a teenage girl before and it shone through.

A twisted concept but makes for a great book! Kept you on your toes throughout, but towards the end I knew how it would play out. The twist I think was expected and alluded to pretty obviously so there was no “OMG” moment for me. Good read.
