Political analyst Noam Chomsky and Middle East historian Ilan Pappe share their views on the crisis between Israel and Palestine. Through the more recent history of the conflict, they both express strong views that point toward liberating Palestine and freeing Palestinians. They also share what the international community needs to accomplish in order for change to finally happen in the region and for the abuse of Palestinians to finally cease.

If you are not familiar with some of the history behind this conflict or others similar to it, this book may be hard to digest, but if you’d like to learn more of what you already know and are seeking a call to action, this book may be a good starting point. It is a fairly short read.

Clear, concise, easy to follow and understand. Like a lot of these types of collections (thinking about Freedom Is a Constant Struggle in particular), it gets a little repetitive, but I tend to appreciate that.

I think the essays compiled at the end are incredible calls to action. It’s difficult to read something written in 2014 about the prospects and imagined future of Gaza amidst an ongoing genocide in Gaza. I would have given this a higher rating if it provided more background on the Palestinian fight for self determination. I have a prior understanding of the crimes committed against the Palestinian people which is helpful to exploring such a heavy book. Hearing from a former Zionist is jarring and prior to reading this book I wasn’t aware that Pappe had been a Zionist. Very interesting.

4.5/5

Not a beginner’s read so prior knowledge of Palestinian history would help with providing context. Also I think if the essays were grouped together at the beginning and the conversations after that would also help and would flow better.

Slightly repetitive at times but an interesting and necessary read. Theorises what the future could look like with Ilan Pappé a proponent for a one state solution and Noam Chomsky supporting a two state solution. Also some much needed propaganda busting.

A very interesting breakdown of the the issues/positives with both the single/double state solutions within Palestine & the boycott movements. also a breakdown of many of the major issues of the Israel occupation, Zionism & the roots/history of Zionism
