very frustrating heroine. I know she went through a lot but seriously I was done with her at a point. She just was so much hard work

The characters in this book are strong and well written. Each with their own set of issues and broken-ness. Although it is a little slow once it picks up it is hard to put it down. Some of the issues covered are difficult but absolutely true to life. I'd definitely read more of this authors books.
didn't finish.
this book was not for me.
I don't understand romance novels where the main character is a woman with so much unresolved trauma and the male love interest just sidesteps all those red flags and becomes his own red flag and relentlessly pursues the woman. She will repeatedly tell him she is not interested, but boy, he keeps trying. This is not a healthy dynamic, and both of them should seek counseling.

Emma has had such a hard life so far even since she was a kid. When she finally ups and leaves Manhattan due to being taken advantage, she goes to her grandmother Lala's house and meets her little sister Nora for the first time. Lala cooks for the first responders every Thursday, especially Reed. Emma hates him right off the bat because of what she went through as a kid from her mother, and it gets worse when she finds out he's a cop. But the way Reed reassures her that he's not bad is so sweet and caring taking his time and not pushing. They finally can't ignore their feelings and start to get closer, with a little meddling from Lala to help, and they each open up about their pasts. Things start to get really troublesome for them with Emma's family, and then especially when the truth about Manhattan comes out that ended up hurting quite a few people. The relationship that Reed has with Nora is just adorable and its rare to hear about someone like him taking on a kid that's not even related to him at all, but he thinks of her as his anyways. I love how everyone in Reeds life welcomed Emma and treated her as part of their group, even with her working on her past demons.

I am….glad I didn’t have to pay for this. ⭐️⭐️.5
I really liked this book. There's a lot of nuance and hidden meaning that I really enjoy. I also love a tortured character that shows a lot of growth and this really gave it to me. IN SPADES. I finished it on Thursday and promptly started it over on Saturday because I couldn't stop thinking about it. It's definitely a slow burn (read SLOW AF) but that's the kind of thing I enjoy. Also there's def trigger warnings that should be heeded. All in all, a great read (tho I listened to it) and now I have to wade through more books to find one to give me this exact feeling that I'm looking ofr.
This was a free book someone gave me and I would have been so upset if I spent my own money on this. I have no idea how this book has 4 stars. Also, I kept waiting for a little thrill to happen since the beginning of the book made it seem like there would be some thriller like surprises. Nope.
