I loved this book more than the main series.
Channi is such a loveable character. She's strong, independent and loving and despite her young age she's so mature and interesting. Her side kick snake Ukar is a personal favourite, I'm always a sucker for a fun and blunt speaking animal companion and here is no exception.
The story stands very well on its own, but obviously knowing how it will end from the beginning and trying to figure out all the plot points made it even more of an enjoyable read for me.
The writing is effortless, the characters chemistry on point, and the devotion and motivations of all characters made sense. I loved all the mythology and magic, bonus points for dragons being featured here and although I was never a fan of snakes, I really loved them in here!
Elizabeth Lim is an auto-buy author for me now and I know that every time I pick up one of her books, I won't be disappointed!

This review has spoilers if you haven't read Six Crimson Cranes and The Dragon's Promise. Which, if you haven't - what the heck are you doing here? Go read those!!! They're really good!!
I'm so impressed with Elizabeth Lim, because throughout Six Crimson Cranes and The Dragon's Promise, she tells you bits and pieces about Channari that keep you so interested in the character, but also, more importantly, tell you two things. One - what Channari's motivations and where they came from. And two - how Channari's story ends.
If she's already given us all the major plotpoints of Channari's past and even FLAT OUT ALREADY TOLD US THE END, how could she write an entire book about the same said story while keeping it fresh and engaging?? HOW DID SHE DO IT?? Worst part is, because Elizabeth Lim is a BRILLIANT author, she took what should have been a story that was sad (but unsurprising) and heightened it to all of its potential tragedy and dramatic irony. And then somehow left room for hope in the end?? What??? Not to mention the fact that she still managed a plot twist in a spot where you KNEW what was going to happen, and, in true Elizabeth Lim fashion, it was one I should've saw coming because she really knows how to Chekov a gun.
My favorite parts of this book were the brutally cruel irony woven throughout so many aspects of the story, and the intense and satisfying character study of Channari.
This book was such a satisfying read. It also threw my still-beating heart at the wall a few times. Geez. Elizabeth Lim has all my feelings in a chokehold at all times.
