This is one of those short story collections where I loved almost every single story!! Absolutely recommend!

4.5, not quite 5 stars. I really enjoyed most of these stories, I thought they were really fun and creative and creepy, and I am now really excited to read the other collections that Adler has edited. I don't know if the physical copy has this also, but the ebook has all of the referenced works by Poe included in the end. That was a lovely surprise.

I decided to only listen to the front half of the book, the retellings, and am returning it before hearing the back half of the original stories, because I can read those on my own time and I want to give this to the next person in line.
I wonder if I would have enjoyed these even more if I had physically read this rather than listening to it in an audiobook format. I did enjoy that I got to hear each individual author tell their story the way they wanted it read, intonations and pacing (though I had it sped up because I am an inpatient reader). Of the stories that I knew, I really enjoyed the retellings. Of the ones I didn't, I almost feel like I will like these stories better than the original. Some of them didn't exactly float my boat, but that's alright. I really enjoyed the motivations for the murders of the retold Tell-Tale Heart and Casks. I also LOVED the retelling of The Oval Portrait and could totally see this version as a Netflix movie or something.

I haven't read all of Poes stories that are featured in this book, but I have loved pieces by him before (Tell-Tale Heart, the Masque of the Red Death, Cask of Amontillado). This book did an amazing job at retelling his stories in a way that features present day technologies (or future) and brings diversity to his works (in race, gender, sexuality). My favorite reimagined stories were (using the original name): Annabelle Lee, The Cask, Tell-Tale Heart, and the Purloined Letter.

Overall, I would recommend I really enjoyed reading this and seeing the authors different takes on his stories.

Retellings: 3 stars
Poe's Originals: 2.5 stars

From this admittedly small sample size I think I’ve come to the conclusion that as an edgy twelve year old I convinced myself I loved Edgar Allen Poe because it was cool, but as an adult with no one to impress the truth is he’s just okay.

That being said, The Tell-Tale Heart does indeed still slap.

This collection of adaptations of 13 of Edgar Allen Poe’s works was creative, eerie, and fascinating. This is the perfect read for spooky season. In addition the collection includes the thirteen original tales as well. I think this book provides content for a powerful conversation on how writing can be adapted and reinterpreted, and how Edgar Allen Poe’s work is delightful, but that there are many ways that his stories can be reimagined to include topics such as technology, race, gender, and sexual orientation relevant to modern and diverse readers. I would highly recommend listening to this wonderful collection.

There's A LOT to love about this queer YA anthology of Edgar Allan Poe retellings, and extra fun that the original stories are at the back of the book!

Overall, this wasn't my favorite book ever, just because there are always going to be stories I like less than others. However, the ones that were good were great.
