oo this was a gripping listen. i do have a soft spot for memoirs narrated by the author. it is a story of like "came from hardship, persevered and then found success (though doesn't mean the end of hardship)" - perhaps a familiar plotline but does it diminish the value of the story? also yeah weird to to call it a narrative when its someone's life. some of her lived experiences i cant possibly relate to because the hardships we've faced are so different but the emotions experienced that she describes do resonate. also important - on top of all the hardship and resilience, so much also on unconditional love for family and friends

5 stars. My sister recommended this story to me after it being her best book of 2022.
I have immense respect for Viola for sharing her story, her reality, and for her to grow into the person she is now after everything she went through. I think her story will educate people more about poverty and racism and the combination of these two. She’s very open and doesn’t shy away from the bad and the ugly.

Listened to the audiobook (recorded by Viola Davis herself) and I loved getting to hear more about her life and herself from her perspective; it’s so easy to develop an idea about a famous person from how they’re spoken about by everyone else, or how they seem in their roles, etc. and we often overlook the journey to their fame and the real life — not the just the gossipy bits everyone’s always frantically trying to eek out of them during interviews — and I think from this I’m walking away with a much more thorough and grounded idea of Viola Davis the person, not just Viola Davis the actress. And I really appreciated her thoughts on finding and being true to that person she’s become, and feel like I’ve learned about lot about how I should continue to do the same for myself; I also specifically appreciated her reflecting on the things that happen in life — the good and the bad. And how to live, learn from, and move on *with* them.
