Wow Viola Davis had a really hard life. I don't give memoirs star ratings but this one was great. Racism, colorism, poverty, misogyny, abuse. I bet this is incredible on audiobook. The writing sounds like a story that flows easily. There's a little bit of timeline shifting that got a little confusing but even that wasn't enough to take away from how good her story is. The love and compassion she has for her family is amazing, there are so many things that happened to her that I don't think I would be able to forgive.
Graphic: Addiction, Animal cruelty, Body shaming, Bullying, Domestic abuse, Misogyny, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexism, Sexual assault, Toxic relationship, Grief, Medical trauma, Abortion, Death of parent, Alcohol, Sexual harassment
Incredibly sad but moving. If I didn’t know Viola would be the person she is today l would’ve stopped listening after the first hour due to the insane things she and her family had to go through. I hope life continues to shower her with love and happiness.

I love Viola Davis, I feel as though she is one of the most genuine actors in Hollywood.
What you see is what you get, she brings her authentic self to her roles, her interviews, her acceptance speeches and definitely to this book.
From her childhood in Rhode Island to acting on stage, to her induction into the Shondaland family with her role in How To Get Away With Murder, her rise to fame story is one of grit, hard work and determination.
There's a line in this book that I love, where she was talking about how people see her and they tell her how great she looks and how she seems so happy and how much she has changed and they credit this to her husband Julius, and she said yeah he did change my life, but "I changed my life and Julius was the reward, my peace was the reward" and I thought that that was such a beautiful way to honour her relationship with her husband without diminishing the hard work she did to get to where she is.
This is a definite five star for me.

“As Black women, we are complicated. We are feminine. We are sexual. We are beautiful. We’re pretty. There are people out there who desire us. We are deserving.”
This was so beautiful.
When I found out that Viola Davis voiced her memoir, I RAN to do an immersive read. Her story is raw, emotional, and spoke directly to my Black inner child.
If I didn’t think I loved Viola Davis & her work before? I do 10x now.
I recommend this read to anyone who is a fan of hers or to a Black woman who struggled through life trying to find where she belonged.
