I was hesitant at first with this book because I had a hard time imagining a mom that could just give up her kid. Even if she did spent 14 years as a fish. And she was just wallowing in the sucky-ness that was her life for the first 25% of the book. Thankfully. Once Evening dies, the story picks up, Toby gets a purpose, and man does it get fun. I have never been so thankful for someone to get killed as I did at the end of this book. I was sad though that the sweet girl who looked up at Toby had to be the one to take him out. 4 out of 5 stars but only because of the beginning. I'm looking forward to the second book!
Love Seanan. Thought this was a fun mystery and love the her being a Fae detective really plays on all the tropes I enjoy. Looking forward to exploring this series further.

I quite liked this! I had some relatively minor issues, first being October making typical "dumb protagonist" decisions more often than I would have liked.
Second being
That aside, I enjoyed the world and the plot and I just really didn't want to put the book down. I've heard it gets better as it goes so I'm going to continue on!

a bit of confusion about how prominent her family was to her, then she was stranded in a pond for 14 years, and didn't really seem all too bothered to be without them after she came back. It was briefly explained that she tried to contact them but nothing really came of it but I expected it to play more of a role in the way October behaved. This is a longer series so perhaps in the future we'll get more on that but it felt like that whole part of the story was missing for me. Particularly towards the end when a doppelganger showed up looking like her daughter and she had such a strong reaction. That aside, I enjoyed the world and the plot and I just really didn't want to put the book down. I liked the concept well enough, especially in terms of the faerie world building, but found much of the explication to be repetitive even within the same chapter. I also felt portions were predictable, but I would keep reading to see more of how some of the relationships could develop in the series. Additionally, Toby had some great bits of wit in her thought processes.

If you're looking for straight-up urban fantasy with some mystery mixed in and zero romance, this is your book. It gets its teeth in right away and doesn't let up for a second until you get to the end. Seamless incorporation of Faerie (the right kind- scary and terrible) with modern day San Francisco. Loved this a LOT.

Rosemary and Rue starts off with something very traumatising happening to the main character. She takes a few books to open up and let people in to her life. Each book gets better and better!
