I'm continuing my search for good novels about fairies. I love folklore and I love when it's used in novels. This 'urban fantasy was pretty cool- a good protagonist and interesting 90s feeling San Francisco setting. The crime, intrigue, mystery stuff was pretty boring to me and I don't like fairy courts. I'll keep reading this series though as I've been told it gets better. As always please send me recs of more fairy books.
Set in a world where being fae is supposed to be a secret, but instead faerie and mortals collides giving us changlings. These half fae, half human spend their lives as outsiders fighting for their place and respect of their immortal counterparts.
October ‘Toby’ Daye is an exception to the rule, openly rejecting the fae life and retreating into a normal mortal life....
... Until the murder of Countess Evening Winterrose. Toby is unable to resist Evening’s dying curse and is forced back into the faerie society and becomes the Duke of Shadowed Hills knight. Renewing old alliances, Toby is forced to solve the mystery of the Countess’s death or die trying.
I was torn when reading this book. Interesting world building and great character development. Toby being a changling does not belong in either the fae world or the human world. However being the underdog fighting for her place in the world makes you want to cheer her on. The story was fascinating and complex and even though i figured out who was responsible for the murder, I loved the conclusion.
Well done Seanan McGuire, you have piqued my interest to carry on reading.

More like a 3.5 star read.
I enjoyed the start of this series, although I will admit that I am a little annoyed that a lot of my questions were not answered in this book. Since this is a series, I am hoping that I get some answers as the series move forward.
The plot of the story kept me hooked and kept me reading because it is intriguing.
I love a great paranormal story and this one did not disappoint.

I like the narrative style here. The protagonist is an individualist and somewhat mistrusting of others, and has a great sarcastic approach to everything. I'm not a big urban fantasy / fairy tale type person, but those parts don't especially bother me, and I like this mystery story and how it gets resolved. The later books in the series are supposed to be much better, so I'm looking forward to continuing this series.
I didn't enjoy this near as much as the author's Every Heart A Doorway, but it was good enough that I'll give the second book in the series a try. If you like urban fantasy (I usually don't), you might enjoy this more than I did.

This is the urban fantasy I have been looking for. October Day is a changeling. Part Fae and part human. Although her blood is thin, she has been knighted and become a Sort if PI for hire. When her Leif’s’s wife and daughter are kidnapped, she is sent to find them. During the investigation, Her liege’s twin turns her into a fish for 14 years. She loses everything: her license, her boyfriend, her daughter. When she comes back, she’s ashamed she failed and avoids her leige.
An old “friend” is murdered and binds Toby with a curse that she must find the killer or die herself.
Lots of twists and turns without being obvious. Interesting characters. Lots of danger and a heroine who often goes off half cocked and gets shot. Toby doesn’t trust herself and believes a lot of the hate sent her way. Her mother sounds like a crazy idiot and Toby carries that around.
I really liked this beginning and look forward to the next.

Some parts of this are wonderfully and fascinating, I love urban fantasy and it's nice to see San Francisco in the mix.
... The problems I have with this is the same ones I have with The Dresden Files. Being human is so ugly, and it's also logically inconsistent. The drama and sexual tension was more distracting, and the random Japanese was a little gimmicky.
Maybe the next book is better.
