Bailed at page 241.  I kept reading in the hopes that I'd "catch on".  It's technically challenging ... by that I mean there are
advanced scientific theories and discussions that are definitely the main character.  Everything reads flat and analytical. And I get why that is in some ways. Maybe I'll have a deep aha moment someday as I reflect on the plot.  I kept getting mixed up by the characters. Probably a cultural blind spot about names 🙂.  And perhaps I'll finish someday. I kept reading, thinking there has to be a giant understanding that crashes down on me if I just keep going. For now I'm done. I'm sure some will love this book. Maybe I will at some point.  Who knows.

One of the best sci-fi books I have ever read - and I've read a lot.

Hard science fiction. Most of the characters are used as vehicles to explain difficult scientific concepts to a general audience of readers. Therefore, character dialogue can seem stifled if you expect character development instead of plot progression. I often felt like I was reading a dense nonfiction narrative.

I wanted to like this book so much. The first third of this book had thriller/suspense themes and was a page turner. The story was great, the humor was well placed, I thought this was going to be a new favorite.

The second third of the book took a different turn. I wasn’t sure that I liked it, but it wasn’t enough for me to stop reading. But it almost felt like a completely different book.

The last third of the book was so hard to finish. The book took another turn for me that I was completely uninterested in. The dialogue changed and became childish, the writing felt rushed, the explanations rushed. Again, it felt like a completely different book than the first 2/3.

I had to give up. It bored me. Painfully slow plot development and characters that were very unlikeable. There was an interesting concept here, but the execution left a lot to be desired.
