I had very low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. It was a lot darker than I thought it would be.

Well, then. Uhhh that was interesting.

This was pitched as dark academia and that's exactly what I got. I can't say A Lesson in Vengeance went above and beyond but it was haunting nonetheless. I can't condense my words so read my book review in length here

DID NOT FINISH: 18%

maybe i’ll give this another go at some point but I‘m almost 20% in and so far just don’t care (& I know it’s supposed to be both, but so far it’s only / more dark academia than thriller)

"When I read books, the boundary between my world and others shifted. I could imagine other realities. I envisioned the tales so clearly that it was as if I lived them."

Ok. I JUST finished reading this book and I don't even know what to think or where to start.

Let's begin with, if you enjoy unreliable narrators, you need this book in your life.

"Maybe it's okay to find comfort in the darkness, as long as I don't let myself take it too far."

This book is a mind bending, psychological....horror? I don't even know how to categorize this book. It's full of psychology! (I have a degree in and am absolutely in live with all things psychology) So, that part of the book what's my favorite.

There are also a few things I did not like about the book. I felt like the events that happened didn't fit well with the age of the characters. Maybe the characters should have been a little bit older for it to feel more believable? It was odd to me that Felicity had just been released from a mental hospital, and yet none of the adults (when they infrequently appear - why are they in high school but rarely had Adult supervision?!) were keeping up with her well being. I also NEED to know what Ellis's book was about! I felt like there was quite a bit of repetition and the book could've been shorter. (But I'm glad I pushed through!)

Two more things I did love - this is a Sapphic novel, full of female characters. The twists in the last 100 pages were amazing.

There is a lot of gruesome and otherwise sensitive content that might not be enjoyable to all readers.

Overall, this book blew my mind. I spent a lot of time being sad for the main character and wishing she could have a support system (definitely my Mom-ness coming out) and a lot of time being creeped out. So....Victoria Lee did a great job at evoking an emotional reaction!

The audiobook narrator kept mispronouncing “macabre” and it drove me up a wall.
