“Sometimes we get stuck admiring our problems, but nothing changes if we don’t actually confront them.”

Early in this book when I realized it wasn’t dual pov, I was disappointed because I really enjoy the perspective of the mmc, however by the end I completely understand why Danny’s pov isn’t necessary.

This is Kaliya’s story, her journey, her growth and she needed to be the center. I enjoyed this so much and specifically this week I really needed to see a black woman advocate for herself and her healing despite her love for the man in her life. So often the world does its best to humble us and convince us that our dreams are not possible and then we lose the will to even try changing our circumstances because we feel defeated. Kaliya rediscovered herself and her purpose AND got her man and I needed to believe that was true again, myself.

Her love story with Danny was very sweet and I especially liked how they learned to be what the other needed and how they weren’t same people when they got back together. This was a beautiful story and one of my favorite reads this year.

Swoon-worthy second chance romance debut; these characters truly felt so real and their love was shown, not told to us. A beautiful mix of romance, individual characters figuring out their way, and the reality of being black in Hollywood. This is also a bit of love letter to movies, and especially black romance movies (had me all in my feels with references to some of my favorites including Love & Basketball and Brown Sugar).

The anticipation in this story was absolutely captivating. The plot and every subplot was designed to draw you in and keep you on edge. How will this unfold, how will that happen, when will we find out about this, when is he or she going to say something. The was the sweetest slow burn I’ve read. There was anticipation in every moment. I simple couldn’t put it down.

I really found myself struggling to dive into this book. I’d read one chapter at a time for days, and my mind was just always drifting away.

But I finally sat and finished it. And I liked the plot a lot. I just didn’t love the love story. The parents? Their love story? Got to my heart way more from what we learned. But the actual love story the plot revolved around? It felt very rushed to me. No real build up. And why it fell apart just didn’t feel like it had a good reason. I wanted to love it so much more than I did.
