I liked the premise of this story, but as the novel went on I found myself losing interest. Not sure if that was more a reflection of myself or of the novel.
Very interesting book. I loved the way it was told through others' points of view. I also really liked the way the end tied it all together. I love books where the character just wants to find themselves and figure out life. Isn't that what we are all looking for?
I love this author! I like the way his stories unfold and his writing style. There were some very striking passages amidst the well paced story line.
I started this two months ago and lost interest. But I only had about 30 pages, so I finished it last night and I'm glad I did. It's a philosophical novel about the feminine side of divinity (the Goddess or "Great Mother.") I felt the story was a bit weak but the message is interesting and the ending has a nice twist. I like this quote: "Love is not a habit, a commitment, or a debt. It isn't what romantic songs tell us it is -- love simply is."
I love Coelho's The Alchemist. In a way, it really had an impact on my life. Since then, I've read three more of his books and none have spoken to me as much as The Alchemist has. Including this latest. In fact, I've found it the weakest of the ones I've read. I found his primary character to be irritating and un-engaging, even though you never really meet her, you just read testimonials about her life. I found that it was the characters talking about Athena, the main character, that I wanted to get to know more and not Athena herself. It was difficult for me to understand if I was suppose to like her and learn from her actions or find her shallow and do the complete opposite of them.
In the end, I would explore the author's earlier books before I read The Witch of Portobello though I loved the way Coelho ended the book by reminding us that "Love simply is."

I dont think i understood the point, maybe i was too young when i read this?
Will probably have to reread it when i’m older, lol.

After reading the Alchemist- I was really excited about reading another book by the same author. His sense of spirituality and his ability to bring a reader on a journey of self discovery with the protagonist was what I had been looking forwards to re-discovering. Instead I opened the book to discover a disconnected and fragmented account of a confused woman with an agonizing self involvement who somehow enchanted all of the people who encountered her (the book is told through their different accounts) but who never quite succeeded in charming the reader. I would not recommend this to my friends.
