At first I was sure I would rate this low, but believe all the other reviews saying the same thing: The payoff is worth it. The first two-thirds of the book are very slow, dedicated to worldbuilding and seemingly pointless conversations between the same five characters. But as soon as the action hits in the last third, it really hits! Looking back, I appreciate the slow build. The stories about the world's mythology are well-written enough to keep your interest until the main plot catches up.

Pretty good, though I felt like the vast majority of the beginning was expository information that bored me to death. It really is important, though, and the book picks up pretty quickly halfway through. I loved how you can tell while reading that there’s more than meets the eye, yet the twists still remain a surprise when they’re revealed.

I got this book cause it got a ton of good reviews so I thought I’d give it a shot but I don’t even want to finish it it’s such a drag. Maybe it’s just not my kinda style of book but not a fan, might not finish it, definitely not gonna finish the series.

It's slow in the beginning, but it's worth it to keep going. Very good story.

A young thief is taken from prison and dragooned into a secret journey to a neighbouring country, presumably to steal something, but what, exactly and why are not revealed to him. This starts out as a straightforward quest, using the travelling time to delineate the personalities of the various members of the group and establish the worldbuilding. The thief is an engaging, if sly, narrator, getting on the nerves of his captors without pushing them too far. Paradoxically, he ends up endearing himself more than he might have expected and starts to feel a responsibility towards them, which might be Stockholm Syndrome, or might be something else. The thievery itself is tense and exciting, and the twists and turns of the attempted getaway are dizzying.
