Liked the concept but it felt forced and hard to follow at times. Maybe was just the wrong time to read it but didn’t love it

This was elegant and beautifully told. While there were some problematic elements (“river gypsies” and no real conversations about the very real racism experienced by one character), the overall story was very moving. The characters demonstrated strength and humanness. I loved the character growth and truthfulness throughout the story. A real look at what it means to tell a story.

Come join us as we go down the Thames and get to know the river and the people who share it’s waters. We shall stop at The Swan, drink and be merry as we listen to the stories woven intricately year after year by the local storytellers. Our story is the story of a small drowned child brought back to life. Who is she and to whom does she belong? Could she be the Armstrong’s daughter missing from 2 years ago or Alice whose mother just died? Or is she Ann, Lilly’s sister from many years back?
Once Upon A River is a beautiful tale full of magical characters and descriptions so lovely you will feel as if you are floating down the Thames right along with Duant, Rita, Helena just to name a few and wait till you meet Maude the cow! As in The Thirteenth Tale, Setterfield has written a wonderfully entertaining novel of a Fairytale for adults! Highly recommend! Suspense, action packed with a little romance and if that’s not enough, touches on the Darwinian Age.

2.5 stars. This book started out strong and ended strong but everything in between dragged on for far too long. By the time I got to the end when it finally started to get good again I was so bored out of my mind I just wanted it to be over. Definitely don’t recommend this. The pacing was far too slow and with there being so many characters I never cared about any of them. There just wasn’t enough in this story to make it worth the time it took to read it.

A welcome break from the formulaic books that I’ve been reading for a while (which were lovely and comforting until they became grating). Really lovely twists and turns. Probably ultimately too sad and dark for me, will likely not re-read. But glad I read it! Ending was a bit to wrappy wrappy

Very slow to start, but once I figured out the rhythm, I really enjoyed.
