The reasons I loved this book have to be how well written this book was and the moments with Delilah and Patrick- especially the moments with D and P. x)

Fixing Delilah tells the story of a family with many secrets and family issues. As the story unfolded I enjoyed reading about the secrets and how they affected each member of the family. Delilah's reunion with her childhood friend Patrick was one of the highlights of the book for me.

Things that intrigued me about this book: it was declared to be a self-discovery tale about a girl who has a lot of growing up to do. It was about a girl who has a lot of jacked up family problems. Hey, who doesn't? I did. I wanted to relate to her. I knew there would be a sweet little love story hidden within.

So..

Love story.
Self-discovery.
Messed-up family.

Count me in.

I read a review about this book before I began that compared it to [b:Saving Francesca|82434|Saving Francesca|Melina Marchetta|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1302788502s/82434.jpg|1369647]. While I do think that if you've read either [b:Fixing Delilah|7074259|Fixing Delilah|Sarah Ockler|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1284431674s/7074259.jpg|7328132] or Saving Francesca, you should read the other... I think Fixing Delilah takes the cake for me. I was quite surprised by this fact because [a:Melina Marchetta|47104|Melina Marchetta|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1277655889p2/47104.jpg] is a brilliant author. I thought that nothing would really trump how crazy her family situations are and how sweetly she intertwines a romance.

I was wrong.

[a:Sarah Ockler|2188726|Sarah Ockler|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1311454451p2/2188726.jpg] did a brilliant job with this story. She kept me guessing. What in the world could happen that two sisters would completely cut off all ties with their mother? Will any of these relationships be restored? Will Delilah's mother PLEASE get off the freaking phone? Can I *please* have a bit more Patrick in my life? I had story lines and solutions all figured out in my head, but sure enough, she surprised me and I didn't guess all the details. Some story lines seem like they're done over and over again, and since I felt like I'd just read Saving Francesca - a similar book in theme, I hoped I'd take away something new from this book. I feel like Ockler achieved that. I love the way she writes - how she gave great descriptive names to certain things (like her mother). She had a few fun life lessons thrown in there, and really hit a home run when it came to my emotions. Sometimes I just wanted to cry my way through the pages because things were so out of whack.

As soon as I finish this review, I'm heading over to Ockler's page to find out what else she's written and how I can get my hands on it!

First of all, a big thank you to my student, Eleni, for giving me this book as a gift for the holidays! I have the best students ever.

Sarah Ockler is an amazing writer. She seems to capture grief in an incredibly realistic, gut-wrenching manner. Delilah Hannaford travels to her grandparents' house after her grandmother's death. She hasn't visited her grandmother since her grandfather's death, when her family had a huge argument that divided them. Delilah feels broken because she missed out on a relationship with her grandmother, her mother doesn't pay attention to her, her boyfriend is a jerk, and she can't seem to stop getting into trouble.

When she reconnects with Patrick, her best friend at the age of eight, everything seems to be perfect, yet she seems to tumble downhill emotionally, and she becomes even more unsure of herself.

I absolutely loved this book. The character development and emotional portrayal is remarkable. The only reason I gave it four stars (rather than five) is that it may teach teens a moral that I am trying to break them of: Love doesn't have to hurt. Delilah feels an incredible amount a pain that made my heart ache. I worry that some teens might read this book and think that it is okay to be in a relationship that brings them pain and anguish. Teenage relationships should be fun and beneficial. Overall, positive relationships should bring joy, and at some points toward the middle/end of the novel, I don't think this is the case for Delilah.

Wow, although it was a one intricate story plot line, Sarah Ockler can write. Her words portrayed through the lovable, believable Delilah Hannaford trickled out slowly like honey then pour into my mind like a sweet soda. Her characters each had a three- dimensional realistic face which helped move the story along at a moderate pace. The one intricate flaw of this book was an opinion flaw. Some people love books were it is romance, and life problems all the time. Which this book was, and even though those books sometimes annoy me this one didn't. Its story was fresh enough to make me happy that it only covered a romance, and a family's problems, and did not have a big mystery unraveling behind it. Other than that the book was fabulous, it was one of those books where when you do not read it your mind is consumed with finding all different possible endings, and even though I had seven(yes seven), different possible endings I was still wrong! Overall this was an entertaining book that captivated my attention in 320 pages of astounding writing!

Delilah's family is torn apart from a long time feud.

Although I thought the love interest was a great story line, I thought the basic plot seemed a little skimmed over. It's a tough topic, though, for any family - so many secrets - that it's hard to find a balance between really wallowing in the horror and understanding the motivations of Delilah. I would have loved more back story and more understanding of the mom and sisters, but it was a nice short read, so that may be a nice trade off at times.
