I 100% picked this up for the autism representation. There’s still very few depictions of autistic females on page/screen and I always crave more. Unfortunately, the whole story fell kind of flat for me. I just don’t think I can get down with the hate to love trope anymore. I really dislike that each character seems to assume the worst about the other for no reason. And this has been going on for a year?! How do you get over that. You don’t just brush off the fact that someone has been treating you like shit for a whole year because they mistakenly assumed you were a horrible person but now they know better. I just don’t get it. I know there’s an audience for this type of hate to love so hopefully those folk find this. There is a bit of You’ve Got Mail thing going on if you’re into that. I think it’s a perfectly good example of what it is and I do appreciate the female autistic representation.

Yes, it is the end of January. Yes, I still read a Christmas book.

This was at times pretty cringy but, in my opinion, a Christmas book kinda has to be.

Loved the demisexual and autism rep. Recognised myself a lot in the main character, which doesn’t often happen in romance books. There’s also Diabetes type 1 rep, which was really nice to see!

One of those magical books that feels like I’ve imagined it before as a dream romance scenario. A Christmastime bookshop workplace rivalry with a secret identity twist and a hockey player love interest? Main character is autistic, realistic and has a personality/thoughtful inner dialogue? Love it all. This one was short but definitely sweet and it will definitely be a Christmastime reread

Meh. I guess I am not the intended audience for this one even though I love bookstores, Christmas and You’ve Got Mail. I did appreciate the main character being autistic though I felt this could have been introduced and developed more subtly; I did not enjoy being told blatantly and repeatedly that the character was neuro atypical/autistic/demisexual. Maybe it’s the novella form; the author has a short time to develop the story they want to share. I do prefer long slow developed reads. The writing overall was very simple, the descriptions cliche and similes, sappy. When Gabby discovers the identity of her online “friend”, she very nearly quotes Meg Ryan’s “I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly”.
Watch You’ve Got Mail instead.

When they said this book was like You've Got Mail, they weren't kidding.
The plot and characters are very heavily based on Pride and Prejudice and its more recent adaptation You've Got Mail, so it's super predictable BUT obviously for those who like the original plot it's very much a comfort read.

Because it's a shorter narrative, the pacing and structure is a little odd, and it was around 40% that I really started to enjoy it. So overall there's nothing wrong with it, it's an enjoyable short story, but don't expect anything revolutionary from it.

I will only stop recommending this book when I have convinced everyone to make it their traditional Christmas holiday read.

Edit 13/12/24: I am once again reminded of why this book is my annual Christmas read.
