Warning: cocaine and brains...
This book had a slow start that left me uninterested, and I temporarily abandoned it for another read. However, when I picked it back up, I must have jumped into the midst of the chaos, because the story suddenly had my attention. It became an absurdly entertaining ride with a satisfying ending.
Maeve may be a princess at a theme park, but don't be fooled – inside her mind is far from magical.
"Men have always been permitted in fiction and in life to simply be what they are, no matter how dark or terrifying that might be. But with a woman, we expect an answer, a reason."
This book will NOT be for everyone. Given the content, I have to assume this book comes with serious trigger warnings. If you have a weak stomach or are sensitive to certain themes, proceed with caution.

I kind of wish Maeve and Gideon could have stayed together, but her ending him— destroying the person who did see her was so powerful. usually in these horror novels of women being the perpetrators of violence they are horrendously bitchy outside of their proclivities but i liked maeve as a character. i appreciated how her insecurities showed up. i found myself wanting to quit reading once gideon went down to the cellar WHYYYYYY. i wish she could have had this one good thing but it wasn’t in the cards for her

'I take another sip and situate my dress around my legs so that more of the blood is visible. It’s prettier that way.'
Put American Psycho and Sunset Boulevard in a shaker, with lots of Monster Mash and Dragula, and add a drop or two of Disney. Serve it in a fancy glass with an eyeball on a cocktail pick and garnish it with smoke. That's a little what this book is like. It's funny and kinky and sad and gross and Halloween infused. It's a ride!
'The Marquis de Sade’s words tumble through my mind. “In order to know virtue, we must first acquaint ourselves with vice.” The night stretches out before me, a great gaping maw.'
