This book took longer then I would have liked to read. It was well worth fitting in whenever I could. I liked how there where pictures and other stuff added in with the text. I hope one day to decipher paged 269-271. I have to admit when Oskar meet William Black I shed a tear at work. It was a story that I will remember and I am looking forward to now seeing the move.

Knitted together in a small New York community are those that are not as different from us as we would believe. Young Oskar Schell must solve a puzzle left behind by his father after his tragic death in the twin Towers on 9/11. An interesting perspective on a time now marked in American History books, Jonathan Safran Foer, takes the reader on a journey with his characters about healing, forgiveness, and grief. As everyone who comes into the story has healing that needs to be guided with patience and time.
I've had a hard time making up my mind about this book about grief and connection. I love the quirky main character. He's kind of asperger-like in his devotion to his obscure interests and quests, with a very kind heart. On the other hand, I didn't enjoy the other half of the story. It was bizarre and other-worldly, but placed in a realistic novel.
Really enjoyed the different way this one was written. Like the way the author descibed the worries as 'heavy boots'

Wow, just wow! This may the only book to make me cry. Loved it!
Go ahead and let the hate comments commence, but I am not a fan of Safran Foer's writing style. It seems pretentious and predictable and too cluttered for my liking. I don't doubt that some find inspiration in his words, but for me it just seems like drivel.
There were things that really touched me in this book--thus the 3stars and I might have liked it more if i had someone to discuss it with. Unfortunately there were parts that were just too weird for me--esp the "letters" written by the grandparents. If they were written for a child or a grandchild, I just don't see why they talked about some of the more crude things they did. Overall, this was not my type of book, but I liked Oskar--felt emotionally attached to him, but I agree with a friend's review that he is not believable as a nine year old--even a smart one. I probably should have skipped the book and just saw the movie on this one ( I say that very rarely and I may change my mind when I see it!)
