Jacqueline Woodson's Coretta Scott King Honor book, Each Kindness, tells about a young girl who moves to a new school and because her clothes look old and ragged Chloe and her friends do not show her any kindness. However, Maya shows kindness to them every day, by trying to share her toys with them. One day Maya does not show up to school and the teacher does a lesson about kindness. She drops a small stone into a bowl of water and says, "This is what kindness does. Each little thing we do goes out, like a ripple into the world." After that Chloe waits for Maya to come back to school so she can show her kindness, but as the days pass, and Maya does not come back the chance to show her kindness is forever gone. This book is beautifully illustrated by E.B. Lewis. His water color pictures brings a softness and gentleness to this book that really portrays the theme well. This will be a great book to begin my school year with.
I see connections between this beautiful picture book and Hundred Dresses. But, having just finished Wonder today, the connections abound. Choose kindness. Chloe wishes she had.

6: Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by E.B. Lewis...as I was directed to read "right now" by a treasured co-worker on Friday. I don't include, as a rule (nor will I start; this is a treasured exception), the children's books I read in my book challenge totals or my posted reviews. However, this is an extremely remarkable book. And it is one that truly everyone--everyone--should read. It is beautifully illustrated, and that is valuable, but most importantly, the story it tells, ultimately about the amazing ripple created by every little stone of kindness...and the extreme sadness when no kindness is shown...is so powerful. I bought a brand new copy for my sweet Hattie, and I cannot wait to read it to her over and over again, helping and hoping her (believing her) to grow into a kind and strong person.
Hard hitter. Reminded me of Larger Than Life Laura.
Such a moving and realistic book about the choices we make and the way we treat others. This will definitely be added to my list of class read alouds.
WOW! I think I just found a new favorite children's book author. This is written with stunning language and obvious forethought. The ending is poignant and left me feeling challenged to take positive action. The illustrations were also beautiful. Loved it and want to own it! I can't think of a single person, child or adult, who couldn't benefit from reading this.
"This is what kindness does . . . Each little thing we do goes out, like a ripple, into the world."
But what if you weren't kind? what if you couldn't think of any kind thing you had done?
Each kindness . . . done and not done.
A powerful story.
An unusual ending for a picture book -- more open ended, unresolved than most (this is a strength, I think.) There's no pat answer here, but children can speculate -- what will Chloe do next? How should Chloe have treated Maya?
E.B. Lewis' illustrations are powerful and add even more impact to the story. The expressions of the children's face ring true. And the isolation of Maya . . . and later of Chloe, as she is thinking about her teacher's words are masterfully done.
