Quick, fun way to brighten your day

Tessa Dare gives us a chance at a happily ever after in a bite sized package. How to Catch a Wild Viscount is humorous and filled with longing. Packed with an unrelenting love and an ardent supporter of never giving up, she does indeed catch him!

I always love Tessa Dare's book. This is definitely a short story, but she always knows how to pack a punch into a few words. Enjoyable story!

'Luke Trenton, Viscount Merritt, returned from war a changed man. Battle stripped away his civility and brought out his inner beast. There is no charm or tenderness in him now; only dark passions and a hardened soul. He has nothing to offer the starry-eyed, innocent girl who pledged her heart to him four years ago.

But Cecily Hale isn't a girl any longer. She's grown into a woman--one who won't be pushed away. She and Luke are guests at a house party when a local legend captures their friends' imaginations. While the others plunge into the forest on a wild goose...er, stag chase, Cecily's on the hunt for a man. She has only a few moonlit nights to reach the real Luke...the wounded heart she knows still beats inside the war-ravaged body...or she could lose him to the darkness forever.'

How to Catch a Wild Viscount is Tessa Dare's debut novella and is on the shorter side at about 75 pages.

I'm a little late to reading her debut novella, but I've recently started reading her books so I wanted to give this novella a read. I love a good gothic spin, plus the pretty cover caught my eye so here I am. And I really enjoyed it. As a novella, it's obviously short and as a result some of the supporting characters were a bit flat and the main characters a bit obvious. But for a debut novella, it's really good! I'm glad the original name of this novella, The Legend of the Werestag was changed for this reprint because I find that original title to be a bit misleading.

Rather abrupt ending, story a bit too short. Also some of the side characters seemed to change personality along the way.

First of all, Tessa Dare could write a grocery list and I'd think it was amusing and charming. Second, I'd read a full-length novel of these two. Hell, I'd read a series of them and their friends.

I quite enjoyed reading this novella (the re-released version, “How to catch a wild Viscount” which is a much better title, btw, and THANKS for making if a free download!) but I will readily admit that I might have frowned upon a few things here and there had I not known this was Tessa Dare’s first published work. But I did know when I started reading and must say that if this was the work of any other author, I might not even thought about what was missing, or not quite perfect.

Well, it’s a novella with all of a novella’s usual problems. There simply isn’t room for a satisfying story or character development, or maybe there would be enough room if Ms Dare hadn’t tried to squeeze as much into it as possible – the MCs’ past, explanations of what has changed since then, witty bantering, the “legend”, what is the relationship amongst the members of this small group, etc etc. Today’s Tessa Dare would have turned this into one of her delightful novels instead of squeezing it all into a novella format – yesterday’s Tessa Dare was still stretching her wings.

As for the characters, I must admit I couldn’t really connect with either Cecily or Luke – don’t know why, but I just couldn’t. I liked Portia and Brooke a lot better and I wonder if there’s a book dedicated to them. I need to take a closer look at all of Tessa Dare’s other novels!

In any case, I can’t stress enough how Tessa Dare is the author who made me re-discover historical romance and for this alone, she’s turned me into a fan.

I’m only giving this three stars because obviously, it cannot keep up with her more recent novels, but it’s a pleasant read nevertheless, an easy read for the daily commute to and from work and I did enjoy it. Only, not as much as Romancing the Duke, or A Week to be Wicked, for example :-)

Haven’t read anything written by Tessa Dare before so I thought I would give it a try since “A Clockwork Reader” mentioned it in one of her videos.

Although some of the plot was basic, and in my opinion over used, I liked the way that Dare had written it - that old, proper English way. However, to me there was a lot of detailed intimacy in the novella which I was not expecting. From the title I was expecting there to be some intimate scenes but not to the extent that there was.

However, I am willing to give Tessa Dare another chance as I do like her narrative voice.
