For some reason, I put of reading this book and I now hate myself for it. It was at medium length and one of the best shifter stories I've read in a long time. Very balanced, just the right amount of sex and a bountiful of feelings. Very-hot rating.

I was impressed by this author using werepanthers because that's not something we see very often. It's almost always vampires/werewolves. Panthers are VERY sexy. Will look for more.

This 5 book series is so lovely. I fell in love with the whole world. Reading it again is like coming home.

The only reason I’m rating this book a bit low is because of the way the world was built in the story. Although there is a glossary it would’ve been helpful if there was a previous book before this that introduced us to the world, the elements and the culture. Instead foreign terms keep being used and I spent a lot of time flipping to the glossary and I was still confused. Majority of the book is just unknown key terms and character cultures. I still like the book and I’ll still be reading the second book. I think this book could’ve been better if there was a book before this or if things were introduced slowly. The context seemed like we should’ve already know this stuff or like this was the third or fourth book in a series when it isnt.

Deeply unsatisfying on many levels.

I liked the romance in this book. I just wish there was more of it. I wanted more of Logan and Jin getting to know each other. I felt that the pacing was too fast and problems got solved very quickly. I wish the places was slower, I would recommend this for a quick smutty read.

Sometimes I read books of a genre I know I generally don't like, to see if there's a hidden gem in it.

This one very much reminded me why I keep away from this genre.

Everyone's realy good looking, and the story is infodumpy, illogical, contradictory, and icky.

Oh and the sex wasn't hot at al.

Change of Heart combined an old favorite (urban fantasy/paranormal/shape shifters) with a new found delight (m/m romance), so I decided to give it a chance. With such a combination, what's not to love, right? Alas, I was sadly mistaken.

It started a little slow for me and I hoped it would pick up. I really, really, really wanted to like this story as it was highly recommended but there were so many asinine plot twists and holes that I found myself sighing, gagging and rolling my eyes on numerous occasions.
SpoilerSeriously, who stops in the middle of an escape attempt from an S&M dungeon or wherever to dance the night away with acquaintances in a night club? O_o

The world that Mary Calmes attempts to create has so much potential but she never really quite explores it enough for the reader to become invested in and connected with/to the characters. Everything and everyone seems so shallow and contrived and far fetched. And really, how could there be laws and rules for the tribes and the people who comprise those tribes either barely or don't know what these laws and rules are. Really!?!?!?!?!?!

Maybe if this was my first introduction to the genre then I probably would have a better appreciation for the world and the plot lines attempted. But having read authors like Nalini Singh who is a master at world building, Ms. Calmes' world just fell flat for me.

I'm really hoping that the series picks up (though in my current state of mind I cannot continue to read it since I want to give it a fair chance), otherwise I would have no choice but to abandon this author.

This was just an "ok" read for me so it gets between 2 and 2.5 stars.

The first 55% or so were really good. The story had me really intrigued and the characters were interesting enough. Sadly, it started going downhill from there for me.

Too much stuff were half-explained and could've used some more details. World-building really should've expanded.

It sometimes felt as if the author knew what she was talking about when it comes to this shifter world; their traditions, laws, customs, etc. (Which, duh, makes sense since she invented it) but the problem is, the way it was written was as if she expected us, readers, to also know exactly what she was talking about without much explaining... So I'd say, most of the time, I was really confused as to what was going on story-wise and why it was all happening.

A little confusion isn't so bad, but it got to the point where I lost interest.

This is my 2nd Mary Calmes book and I feel pretty confident in saying that she's not for me. Judging from her reviews, readers tend to either looooooove her or wonder how the hell she got published / popular. (Which is often a sign that an author writes really emotionally compelling books but with a lot of technical / craft flaws - either the emotions pull you through the writing quirks or you just can't even.)

I just couldn't. I didn't find this emotionally compelling so I really noticed the flaws. I got it for free and I was hoping for something that'd make me forget my life for an hour or two. But it was sooo tedious. The world building is complex but makes no real sense. Same with the plot. There's a lot going on but I didn't feel like the emotional stakes were very high.

The hero (and narrator) has the common sense and self preservation skills of a house plant. He consistently undervalues himself, even though everyone around him loooves him - even the people who want to kill him at first end up loving him. But I have no idea why, or what, exactly, makes him so damn lovable, other than he's the special whatchamacallit.
