I got this book because I enjoyed Lullaby (which is apparently MUCH milder than this book) and wanted to find out more about this author's infamous style. I also decided to read it because of a love for scary stories and the inner nerd in me liked the Canterbury Tale structure.
However...
I just couldn't finish this book. The stories were not entertaining to me, they were just...disturbing. I found myself making the same face as the one on the cover. That being said, this is is probably an unfair review, but my interest in Palahniuk has been satisfied.

It was pretty good , the short stories were interesting … but so slow paced ☹️ sorry kaylee 😔
Too much body horror, I love horror but more psychological. This made me nauseous
Humorous horror is a difficult balance to strike. Palahniuk pulls it off in an impressive way though in this collection of short stories that reminded me of a perverse re-imagining of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. 17 creatives gather for what they believe to be a writer’s retreat in an old theatre. They each have delusions of grandeur and believe they will walk away fabulously rich and famous as they recount stories both TO one another and ABOUT one another. These stories are mostly vile and upsetting in the worst of ways that also were intensely original.
If this book was one degree less weird or had 5 fewer characters I think it would have been a masterpiece. There was a little bit too much going on but the core of what was there was amazing and made me excited to dive deeper into more Palahniuk.

Would’ve been 4 stars if “Speaking Bitterness” wasn’t in there.
