Let me first mention that this was the first Chuck Palahniuk that I've ever read, and this book was recommended to me. After reading "Guts", I wasn't too sure I wanted to finish, because that story alone made me sick to my stomach. I had to go outside for a breath of fresh air. So needless to say, I was a little worried. But I finished. And I'm not too sure that I want to read any more of his books. Don't get me wrong. The book was very well-written but just a little too disturbing for me. Granted, a lot of the stories and characters seemed to be rather exaggerated, like caricatures more than real people, and there was humor to be found in all the darkness. But that's just it. Too much darkness. And selfishness. And indifference. This book left me feeling sad and lonely and a little uncomfortable with human nature. Maybe that's what Palahniuk was aiming for: to make us all think a little more deeply about how we treat others and what we would turn into if put in that situation. He showed a side of humans that I think we see more and more nowadays, particularly with all the reality shows that are popping up left and right: that part of us that seeks attention, that seeks fame and fortune, that seeks it regardless of how we manage to obtain it.
Zero stars. Threw it into the garbage once I finished the assigned readings. It’s just a bunch of short stories that are all disgusting and oddly misogynistic. Not about it.
Probably the best Palahniuk I've read so far, except for Fight Club.
Haunted is my favourite Palahniuk book. I can't tell you how much I dislike short stories on the whole, however this novel at it's core is a collection of short stories. A collection of short stories that I absolutely loved. What makes this novel work is how Palahniuk has linked those individual stories together. I think it's almost like he had various stories sitting in his head and none of them were full length novels, but they did deserve something more and that's just what Palahniuk did. In classic Palahniuk style there's a twist at the end. I realize due to the contents of the short stories this may not be everyone's taste, but it's so well written that I really recommend this.
The main storyline, though at times was interesting and not poorly written, hardly kept my attention, and the short stories and poems in between were mostly skimmable. Took me forever to get through this book. I'm glad to be done with it.
I finished it to understand what the hype is about.
It's about nothing, its boring, nothing about this is profound and honestly? i just don't care
